The New Space Opera and The New Space Opera 2, both edited by Jonathan Strahan and Gardner Dozois. The first is the better of the two. ... one, "The Price," about cats, was intriguing. The second, "The Daughter of Owls" wasn't much of a story.
79) The New Space Opera
An anthology of operatic sci-fi. Kage Baker's "Maelstrom" (a play based on Poe's "The Descent into the Maelstrom" opens on Mars's first ... ... an exclusively sf anthology I'd award 5 stars, although I'd certainly say that among the best sf anthologies I've read are The New Space Opera, The Space Opera Renaissance, Text: Ur, The Del Rey Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Mirrorshades and Bending the Landscape: Science Fiction ... ... they're more thriller-ish than Century Rain or The Prefect.
But for "pure" sf, you probably can't do better than The New Space Opera and The New Space Opera 2, which are indicators of the state of the genre. ... Protecting Children from Sex, by Judith Levine

3. The New Space Opera, edited by Gardner Dozois and Jonathan Strahan
March 2009
4. Sister Alice, by Robert Reed
5. Circles in the Stream (Avalon: Web of Magic #1), ... Really? Not by my count. Last year there were two from The New Space Opera, one from Logorrhea and one from The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction.
Anyway this year I have read more of the stories, as I buy the Eclipse, Fast Forward and the Solaris anthologies, so maybe they stand out ... ... 1.google.com/images?q=tbn:fbJZJpguNf2IRM:http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n3/n17125.jpg">
I am also reading The New Space Opera, a collection of short stories I saw touted here, and I am enjoying that. I don't buy into the "Space Opera" as a genre {I know, no one is waiting for ... ...
The Del Rey Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy is a good varied anthology, with strong contents. Also good was The New Space Opera. And I'm looking forward to The New Space Opera 2... Have joined, have voted. My only SF books this year have been Fairyland, New Space Opera and Vonnegut. I have about 15 years to fill in and have missed some of the older classics like The Book of the New Sun. Hi everyone. Themed anthologies are an entirely different animal - original, or reprint. For example, I thought The New Space Opera was very good, but was totally unconvinced by Hartwell's argument in The Space Opera Renaissance (although there were some good stories in it). Glorifying Terrorism struck me ... ... time-travel organisation. I've heard they're good. Definitely not New Space Opera though.
I didn't think the Arnason in The New Space Opera qualified either.
One name that never seems to crop up in discussions of New Space Opera, although I think he qualifies is William Barton. If ... ...
Other female authors... Elizabeth Bear, perhaps, although I've not read anything by her. The Kage Baker story in The New Space Opera is not even space opera, never mind New Space Opera (and she can't do Brit characters to save her life).
Am I the only one who thinks it's silly to ... ... has contributed to a number of critical magazines and books. Although, to be fair, I disagree with much of his review of The New Space Opera.
... which to my mind features several stories which are not at all space opera. And Paul Kincaid in his review of The New Space Opera disagrees with its editors' thesis (see here).
... Alastair Reynolds is basically the biggest writer in this vein. Then comes Robert Reed. And of course, the anthology New Space Opera.
Anyone have any insights, explanations, or anything else to add? Anyone think it's BS? 'Who's Afraid of Wolf 359?', Ken MacLeod - the only short story I'd read before it was nominated (in The New Space Opera). Reads a bit like two stories welded together. It wasn't the strongest in the anthology.
'Tideline', Elizabeth Bear - change the war-robot to a grizzled veteran and you've ... ... Channel, Ken MacLeod
Matter, Iain Banks
Helix, Eric Brown
The Prefect, Alastair Reynolds

Original Anthologies. Fast Forward and New Space Opera are not bad, but they are not as good as Eclipse One: New Fantasy and Science Fiction, Jonathan Strahan, ed. (Night Shade Books)*. My Hugo ballot was filled with stories from there, including a wonderful Peter Beagle story.
* ... I'm presently reading The New Space Opera, because I grew up on Edmond Hamilton and Doc Smith. The first few stories in the anthology are a bit too dense for my liking (too many thoughts and words, not enough ZIP and BOOM to satisfy the Inner Child I Still Nurture), but a few of the stories ... Not at all. I just thought Silverberg's story in The New Space Opera was piss-poor.
I wasn't sure what point you were making about William Barton. His novels are hard to find because his publisher never promoted him very well. But his books are definitely worth tracking down. Well, except ... > 146:
Barton didn't have a story in The New Space Opera. Silverberg had a story in The New Space Opera. It was rubbish - some feeble retelling of Scheherezade and completely pointless. ...
