... that they'd destroyed it, but everything seemed intact. I can't wait to see what they do with the Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass. This movie is definitely going on my shelf in special edition when it comes out.

I am still reading The Amber Spyglass. For some reason I can't get as into it as I did the first two.

... Game and the accompanying series, Harry Potter, Eragon, etc. I find there are also a lot of tomboyish girls, like Lyra in His Dark Materials or Tally in Uglies, that I think boys can relate to as well. There are also male supporting characters in those series. Outside of sci-fi fantasy, ...

I stopped by a fabulous children's bookstore and did some Christmas shopping: - two sets of the His Dark Materials trilogy The Golden Compass, the Amber Spyglass and the Subtle Knife. One set is for my daughter, and one for my niece. - The White Giraffe, by Lauren St John - T ...

I'm now on the third book of the His Dark Materials trilogy. I also started Niall Ferguson's Colossus.

Well let's see. I'm still reading The Amber Spyglass for fun. I'm reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to my son. With my ninth graders I'm reading Night. And finally with my eleventh graders I'm reading Othello.

I finished reading the last of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, The Amber Spyglass earlier today. I tried to write a review on paper since I didn't have a computer handy, but was just too upset about the news of people protesting the film of The Golden Compass and keeping kids ...

The last thing I bought was the 10th Anniversary Edition of His Dark Materials Trilogy. You decide. TPBM has been fighting a headcold this week.

... statements about C. S. Lewis and Christians in general. So I guess I feel that Focus on the Family need not fear His Dark Materials. It’s not an immoral series. If God really were a wicked old coot, then we would be right to oppose him, etc. But there are certainly other ...

... company too. It wasn't until I read several threads of LT that mentioned Pullman as being quite the vocal atheist and The Dark Materials trilogy as reflecting that. Then of course I went back and glanced through them again and saw it. Just dense, that's all I am! ;-) I agree maggie. ...

I got the next two in the trilogy and am about halfway through the last one The Amber Spyglass. Quite enjoyable for light bedtime reading but I won't be telling people it's a "must read". To be honest I was interested in what was said about the religious aspects but I feel the press has made more ...

hi guys! I'm reading (he he he letta #57) Betrayed by Kristen & P.C. Cast, book two. also the Amber Spyglass and i have nooo idea what in the world i will read next... bummer.

After finishing The Golden Compass on Wednesday, I am now almost done with The Subtle Knife and have The Amber Spyglass ready and waiting... I am very much enjoying Philip Pullman as you can see.

... Knife a couple hours ago but was out of the house and couldn't start the next book! Thankfully I'm home now and can start The Amber Spyglass. :) Edited for touchstone problems.

I started Compass last week, and finished the Amber Spyglass over the weekend (and have to say, immediate gratification-wise, it was a treat to have the whole series available to read at once rather than having to wait until the next volume was published), but digressions aside, I just didn't ...

I've read all three and The Golden Compass was my favorite because of Lyra. I have to admit The Amber Spyglass just put me off. It just seemed too didactic and bent on getting an agenda across rather than tell the story.

... favorite character. He was loyal, kind, wise and strong. A good leader. To be true, I enjoyed The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass more. I felt the rest of the series had more action and movement than The Golden Compass did. My younger cousin (12) and I (31) read them at the ...

Aw, I liked The Amber Spyglass best of the three. Possibly in part because there was less Lyra...sure, she's spunky and all, but she's such an annoying little brat. On the other hand, I adore Mary Malone. Dealing with Dragons is one of my favorite rereads - the whole series, actually. Cimoren ...

I really enjoyed The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife. By the end of The Amber Spyglass I was over it. I'll be interested to read what you all think. I'm sure there will be some very interesting discussion.

Have finally finished The Amber Spyglass (it seemed to go on forever). I have now started The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde, so far, as expected, it is brilliant.

    76. The Amber Spyglass

#127 Joycepa - I am at present reading The Amber Spyglass and find it marginally better than the previous two, I think they are overrated. I have never read any Harry Potter and do not intend to do so, I cannot abide anything to do with it.

... trilogy is how well Pullman integrates physics, religion, and philosophy into the story. I've just begun the third book, The Amber Spyglass, and so far I have absolutely loved the clever little parallels between creation, the fall, god, original sin, and his fictional story. His books may be ...

... and "The Golden Compass." Someone pointed out once that the other two books mention an artifact (The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass), so it makes sense that The Golden Compass does too. But I'm partial to "Northern Lights" also because I used to live in North Dakota, where the North ...

... are both in my TBR pile from the library, so hopefully will be getting into those soon! I'm also stuck in the middle of The amber spyglass by Philip Pullman...and have been for about 3 months. Flew through the first 2 books but have stalled. Gah!

... Pullman writes pretty well, alhtough there are a couple of slow sections in the second The Subtle Knife and third The Amber Spyglass volumes, but I don't remember thinking that in the first The Golden Compass.

... others had read The Blue Girl! I like that book a lot! But of course, Tamora Pierce's books trump all, except maybe His Dark Materials. Cool people are definetly here...

... these books so old? I think Lord of the Rings should be there, even though I didn't like it. And where's Otherland? His Dark Materials? I know they are "officially" 3 or 4 books, but who cares? They're one story.

I definitely agree about Inkheart and His Dark Materials! You can't go wrong with Narnia, either, and I loved East, by Edith Pattou. I think I will have to give Tamora Pierce a try, since she's so highly recommended here.

... Endymion. I can't decide whether to start The Rise of Endymion and just finish up the series, or if I want to read The Amber Spyglass first and finally finish that series (which is not a reread). Or I could finish The Hobbit which I have been gradually rereading. Too many choices.

I just finished The Amber Spyglass and Extras - both were great! I LOVE Scott Westerfeld's books. I just started reading the first book in the Edge Chronicles Beyond the Deepwoods.

I really enjoyed that series, but The Amber Spyglass not so much. But now that I've read (some of) Paradise Lost and heard of the relationship between the two, I'll try reading the series again. If I can find time, that is, with the stacks of other books I have to read.
