Today i learned (or guessed) that the "daemons" in His Dark Materials are taken from the daimôns or inferior deities of ancient Greek religion. No doubt i could have found that out a while back when i read the book, but it was more ... Charlie Bone series, The Little Prince, His Dark Materials series, some classics well i can't edit my prior message, but i would assert that Pullman's His Dark Materials is defn. SF. I have to say that The Golden Compass remains my favorite of this series, but I liked reading through until the end. I liked the ending, although it seemed a bit ... ... books, aren't they? I agree that the girl who played Lyra was perfectly cast, and actually really good at the part. The Amber Spyglass may be my favorite of the trilogy. Pullman is so imaginative - I love the concept of a visible soul, and the way the children's daemons change, but the ... ... to finish the book or be bothered to read the others.
I did not like the Lemony Snicket books or Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series either. Generally I enjoy YA books and I think there are some fabulous ones being written these days. ... neat idea! I have two books that would fit this on my list of things to read soon, but I have to read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials books, because I borrowed them from a friend, so I can't join in whole-heartedly. I will definitely participate if you do it again! I definitely think The Amber Spyglass is worth the read. However, people seem to either love The Golden Compass and not much care for it's sequels, or feel rather indifferent towards The Golden Compass and end up loving The Amber Spyglass. I fall firmly in later category. ... it was amazing. I'll be buying the second one soon.

But then, I also started bawling at the end of the His Dark Materials trilogy-why is it that YA books make me cry more than deaths in adult books! ... it's good when she finally gets cancelled, but there's something about her in this scene that is just so majestic.
In The Amber Spyglass, when Lyra saves the world (vague to avoid a spoiler). That is maybe the most exquisite single scene I've ever read. I'm planning on reading The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass, Twilight, and Fahrenheit 451 (for school). Plus, as many others from my TBR pile as possible. I am reading the Amber Spyglass The first one that pops right into my mind is The Amber Spyglass and here there's a MAJOR SPOILER!!!

I'd forgotten a lot of details though I remembered the story as a whole. ... ... eventually they'll make sense if you keep reading (at least if it's a good authore you will!) I finished The Amber Spyglass -- I was underwhelmed by the trilogy as a whole. I just got back from a short holiday. While away I finished off The Amber Spyglass, Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a Time in the North, (all by Philip Pullman), Storm Front by Jim Butcher, and Water : Tales of Elemental Spirits by Robin McKinley and Peter Dickinson (Pool of ... ... and reading The Constant Princess. Hollybeee and I are supposed to trade, I loan her the series and she loans me His Dark Materials but we both have really bad memories, so I don't know when we'll actually do this. I also need to reread Prince Caspian but she has my copy of that ... ... great. This was my first book by him and I think I expected more.
I am now dutifully finishing Pullman's trilogy with The Amber Spyglass, but I am slogging a bit. IMO, these novels lack the magic and sense of reality of Harry Potter and certainly cannot touch The Lord of the Rings. I also got Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman.

Anyways, I promised you my opinion of His Dark Materials by Pullman. Though a Christian myself, I was not inflamed by his books. This may have more to do with my personality than the material itself.
