Having a go at A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters. Glad you liked A Rare Benedictine. A Morbid Taste for Bones is the official "first" book in the series, and I hope to get to that book soon. The Harding books sound good as well. LT has given me SOOOO many series to try - I'm almost hoping that I dislike some of them so there's less pressure! ... ... would get even more background of the period and she would be able to obfuscate the reader more successfully. I'm assuming Morbid Taste for Bones is the first one?

Maybe the prof is trying to make a point about the way saints' relics were treated in the Middle Ages? ... selection of textbooks. The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Prince make sense to me but the other two, Gates of Fire and A Morbid Taste for Bones strike me as strange. Historical fiction used as textbooks? Has anybody else seen anything like this?

I bought it from Amazon as the fourth book of buy 3 get 1 free. I bought it because a friend who is addicted to mysteries gave me a big box of books and there were several Brother Cadfael books in it. I ... #162 I read A Morbid Taste for Bones a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. I too will continue with the series. Have you read The Mistress of the Art of Death? I have A Morbid Taste for Bones down on the shelves somewhere, but its existence was somehow wiped from my brain... guess that means it's time to dig it out again (the book, not my brain... though that might help on a Monday like this). #12-A Morbid Taste for Bones I love this series & one of the things i enjoy about is the language-it is so much a part of the flavor, some might call it arcane, but it adds immeasurably to the atmosphere & really takes you back to the Welsh border country of the 12th Century. And I tried A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters but I wasn't in the mood for the Medieval setting. I do have a collection of Sherlock Holmes that I plan to read, again someday. ... wonder if it would have been more captivating to start with an earlier book in the series, such as A Rare Benedictine or A Morbid Taste for Bones.
It could very well be that it's not your thing. A very big part of the attraction for me was the illustration of the different kinds of faith ... ... Harry Kemelman has some fun mysteries with a very practical rabbinical viewpoint on people and life. Dorothy Sayers and Ellis Peters are two of my other favorites who bring in plenty of moral and ethical issues.
