Lt. William Turner wird auf eine Sloop in die Karibik kommandiert, um Schmugglern das Handwerk zu legen, die die aufsässigen Kolonisten in Nordamerika versorgen. Wir sind im Jahr 1776, und die Sympathien des Autors liegen mehr bei den Briten als bei den Yankees. Turners Mannschaft enthält eine Reihe von Loyalisten, die allesamt von Massakern der Revolutionäre zu berichten wissen. Diesen Aspekt findet man wohl eher selten in historischen Romanen über diese Zeit.
Als Ex-Seemann ist der Autor wohl in nautischen Dingen beschlagen; der Stil ist kompetent aber unelegant. ( )
