( ) Handsome Narmer, the Golden One, is the anointed successor to his father, ruler of Thinis, a town on the banks of the Nile around 3000 BCE. This is over 400 years before the first pyramid is built; when wheels or domesticated animals are new innovations to most. Agriculture is relatively new, as are cities, and hippotamuses and crocodiles still live in the great river. These two animals change Narmer’s life when his jealous older brother, Hawk, tricks him into hunting a non-existent hippo and instead he is taken by a crocodile. Only a visiting trader from Ur saves his life. He can no longer be ruler so goes instead with the trader. The experience of an amazing world beyond the mud walls of Thinis changes Narmer, and in time Egypt. A thrilling read, highly recommended Excellent adventure about a boy born to be a leader who has his birthright taken away in a way both physically debilitating and emotionally scarring, as it is through betrayal. but this boy is mentally strong and has a chance to follow a completely different path with solid companions. We are taken through a fascinating journey through Ancient Egypt as this damaged boy regains his spirit and then his place in the world. no reviews | add a review
