... be my last. The writing was pedestrian, the story more fiction than not, and it wasn't even all that interesting. 81. Black Ships by Jo Graham. 5 stars. OMG I loved this!

... I had the wrong book! I have never read Jo Graham, but she sounds interesting so I am going to have to check out Black Ships! thanks.

... the substance was intriguing, the writing wasn't anything to write home about (haha, pun intended). I'm in the middle of Black Ships by Jo Graham and am enchanted and enthralled by it and can scarcely bear to put it down to do anything else. Fortunately, I'm on vacation visiting a sister who ...

Finished 9 Dragons by Michael Connelly yesterday and The Shack by William P. Young this morning; am now reading Black Ships by Jo Graham and The Murder of King Tut by James Patterson.

... to ancient Egypt in Hand of Isis by Jo Graham, been looking forward to this one for awhile since I loved her first book Black Ships.

Black Ships comes to mind. It's Aeneas' story rewritten to be more realistic for the time when it was set vs. the time when Virgil was telling it, and although it's described as fantasy because there are oracles speaking to gods and goddesses, I'd have no trouble believing that it accurately ...

Hi Ronin, Sorry you were not able to read Black Ships . Glad your group liked it, and I hope you do get to it in the future. Very cool reviews yourself. I have read the 2 Sharon McCrumb books. They were cute. I do go to cons, so I have seen the nuts she writes about. I liked book 1 ...

Hey Ronin, I am just checking in. I remember in my thread that you said your book group had chosen Black Ships in June and I was wondering how that went?

Well my group enjoyed Black Ships . They liked that it was a different take on the Trojan war, most other books focus on the siege and the battles, not the aftermath. It was also much better and refreshing after our last 3 which were not so good. Interestingly others were also surprised about ...

53. Black Ships by Jo Graham, Historical Fiction/Fantasy, Completed 5/16/09, Stars: 5 I really loved this book. It started a bit awkwardly in terms of the writing, but the author worked that out quickly and it was a pleasure to read the rest of the way. I liked the setting, the ...

#16, Storeetllr, yes Black Ships is wonderful. I finished it, and the sad stuff was less than I expected but still tragic. Can't wait for book 3, and I wonder how it will relate to the other 2. I am now starting Tokyo Year Zero by David Peace. It is set in post WWII Tokyo, where they ...

I finished Black Ships and have left the bronze age. I am now in post WWII Tokyo, hunting a serial killer, a former Japanese soldier in Tokyo Year Zero by David Peace. It is also a RL book group read.

Oooh, Ficus, Black Ships sounds good! I finished The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao last night and must say it was incredible! I found parts of it very hard to take ~ I will never think of sugar in quite the same way after the scenes in the cane fields ~ but parts were pure wonderment. It ...

About 2/3rds of the way through Black Ships by Jo Graham. I am enjoying it, though it isn't what I would call fast. The bumpy writing evened out, and I was engaged much quicker than with her 2nd book (Hand of Isis). I am at the point where I like the characters and am worried that bad ...

I am in the Aegean in the Bronze age after the sack of Troy, looking for a new home with other survivors in the Black Ships by Jo Graham.

... More a thriller that a mystery. Would have probably dumped it, but it was a book for a RL book group. I am now reading Black Ships by Jo Graham. It is listed as fantasy, but it is really historical fiction. The fantasy part is that the gods are real, and the main character is a Pythia. It ...

I am reading Black Ships by Jo Graham. It is listed as fantasy, but it is really HF. The fantasy part is that the gods are real, and the main character is a Pythia. It is about the remnants of Troy looking for a home. A retelling of the Aeneid. So far its good, though the writing is a ...

this month i've read the night angel trilogy by Brent Weeks, then Black Ships and now Hand of Isis, interspersed with an Alfred Bester collection Starburst and a random C.Pike book - i forget which one.

First new (not second hand) books this month Black Ships that I've been desperate to get since I read the first chapter, seems like historical fiction to me so I went straight there but I couldn't find it and asked for it and she led me to - fantasy, which is where I would have gone next anyway, ...

Another newish author worth checking is Jo Graham - Hand of Isis is really well done (had not read Black ships yet). It's history/fantasy mix.

#155: Black Ships looks very good! I will add it to the Continent.

... though, I would recommend Margaret George's Memoirs of Cleopatra rather than Hand of Isis. I would strongly recommend Black Ships, though.

... plus well-rounded characters and good writing. I'm really looking forward to reading her first novel of the ancient world, Black Ships.

I'd say the stars for me were The Translator: A Tribesman's Memoir of Darfur (simple, wise, beautiful), Black Ships (a great fantasy beginning a new series), and Winter Rose (lovely historical fiction). There've been some other good ones, but those really stood out. I'm not done with The So ...

#52. No. I am hoping they are standalone as the description suggests. I got one of my RL book groups to read Black Ships for the month of May, so I don't want to start it until April/May. That way the details will be fresh for the group discussion.

#7, sorry about that. I've had Hand of Isis on my "TBR" list for a few months now after reading the author's first book, Black Ships, really enjoying it, and checking the publisher's site for her next novel. (On the flip side, though, only you Canadians can get the book about the Bounty ...

Just about to start reading Black Ships by Jo Graham.

I have bought Black Ships, From Eden to Exile and The End of Mr. Y. I have been tempted by a few others, but when I looked at them in the store I decided not to buy them.

I've bought Becky and Black Ships, but there have definitely been others on the list that I may yet be tempted into buying.

#26 I also bought a copy of The Somnambulist. I think the only other book I purchased was Black Ships.

I do want to read Black Ships as well. I also really wanted to read The Arthurian Omen but after having read the reviews of it, I may just try to get it off of BookMooch or PBS, rather than spending money on it!

... how much good advertising they'll get just by putting their book on the list.... The only one I've bought so far is Black Ships, but there are several others that I would have considered if the reviews had been more favourable.

The three best books I've read this year that I would never have picked up if I weren't on LT are Black Ships by Jo Graham, an ER book, Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, and Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn.

I've been requesting since the first round and received two: Black Ships and Owning the Olympics. I've really enjoyed both.

I went out and bought Black Ships, and it was in the regular fantasy section, not YA. Though actually, I saw it first on the display table at the front, which was fortunate--I hadn't realized that it was being released in paperback, or I would have bought it much sooner! So, I'm coming to this ...

Looking at the recommendations for Black Ships, I was surprised to see that they were entirely not what I would have expected. The only recommendations that exist are for books with "similar" tags, but they don't really seem similar at all. When I looked at the expanded tag cloud, it didn't ...

Talbin: I'd just assumed that Black Ships was a YA novel, because that's how it reads to me (i.e. much less sex and violence where they could have been included), and based on the cover art.
