Late Nights on Air sounds interesting. I'll look for it at the library. Excellent review and assessment of the reasons it didn't work for you. T'would be a dull old world if we all liked the same things, eh? ;)

I don't know, I may have to check Late Nights On Air out just for the canoe trip stuff--that's my family's business, whitewater canoeing (www.canoewest.net), but the rest of the book sounds kind of grim. Thanks for the review.

I agree about Late Nights on Air. I haven't been to Yellowknife, but I have been to the Yukon, and spent too much time in northern BC. I think she captures the north very well, as you described. Another aspect that is very northern is the group of characters--odd, perhaps misfits to some degree, ...

Late Nights on Air will probably be my NWT book too. Excellent map--I still feel a little odd seeing the Northwest Territories split in two like that, though.

I recommend Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay. She does a good job of capturing the feeling of the North.

I'm in 1970s Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in Late Nights on Air, and I'd say that Elizabeth Hay does a fine job of catching the feeling of summer in the Canadian far north.

I loved Late Nights on Air. Just curious: bojanfurst -- What did you find annoying about it? I'm reading fluff right now: Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich. It's a little like eating chocolate.

>14 Nickelini: I am curious what you make of Late Nights on Air. I quite liked it, but there were a couple of annoying things about it.

I'm about to leave for Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories in Late Nights on Air, by Elizabeth Hay. Although it's waay north, it's still well south of the Arctic Circle.

As soon as I finish this post, I'm going to start Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay. It was last year's Giller Prize Winner.

Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay just arrived, and I need to read it for book club by next Tuesday.

Louanne, yes I enjoyed Late Nights on Air very much, it was interesting to read becaues some of the places that are refered to in the book either I live near them(Ottawa, Almonte) or I have lived near(Manitoulin Island). I will have to read A Thousand Splendid Suns and Hotel for sure.

... for women of Afghanistan. Just take a look at the news! Sad. Hotel will be one of my faves of the year. You liked Late Nights on Air? My club is reading that shortly.

I'm saving the last ten pages of my re-reading of Late Nights on Air til morning because I know how good it will be./Tonight we will watch The Reader.

#14 Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay was a great read and I really enjoyed it. I really liked the ending of the book. It was neat reading about places that I have been to or live near.

I am really enjoying reading Late Nights on Air loosha and katylit. I am almost done it and can't wait for bookclub to talk about it. I live just outside of Ottawa and that is where Elizabeth Hay lives, so we may have her come that night.

... for the recommendation :-) She's a wonderful writer! I love finding great new authors (new to me that is). I loved Late Nights on Air, that's one I'll definitely be re-reading one day. I'm glad to hear that about Before Green Gables Cait86 and raidergirl3. I've avoided it like the ...

I'm in Yellowknife, learning about how the radio station works. Late Nights on Air, a re-read. "You don't look anything like how you sound.' Harry turned. He took off his glasses with one hand and studied her. "That," he said gravely, "is the tragedy of radio."

I lovedAway, but my favourite of Urquhart was The Underpainter. I'm beginning a re-read of Late Nights on Air. Even better the second time.

I enjoyed Late Nights on Air tremendously. Having lived in Northern Alberta and Ontario I loved how Hay captured the atmosphere of northern living. It brought back some good memories. I hope you like it heidimorden. I'm reading Clara Callan and enjoying it very much. It takes place very ...

I am starting Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay for bookclub.

# 14 will be Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay, wich I will pick up on Thursday at book club. I have taken a little break form read for a few days but it is driving me crazy not reading. Good thing that Thursday is soon, 2 days!

Finished reading Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay and loved it. Have now started The Cleft by Doris Lessing and not loving it so much. She's really gone out there this time and while I find it interesting, it's also hard to read.

Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay. Read twice (most recently last year) and didn't like it.

I loved Late Nights on Air very much, but I can see how others wouldn't. 23- Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay I loved much of the writing of this book, but it felt unfocused. I kept having the question, who is this book about? Who can I identify with here? So much time was spent with Dido in the beginning and then she disappears. While we feel close to Harry ...

I'm also in Yellowknife in 1975 with Elizabeth Hay's Late nights on air. I Must like dull places, because I am quite enjoying this book. About 2/3 of the way through and now we are in two canoes travelling by land and water through the Barrens.

... and most of them would agree with you that it's a very dull place :-) On a more serious note, I'm sorry to hear that Late Nights on Air is boring--I've been looking forward to that one. edited for touchstone.

17. Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay excellent book-Hay creates a group of characters who work at the radio station in Yellowknife in 1975. They come from elsewhere, are either running away from or journeying towards something in the north. Some go on a canoe trip into the Arctic that ...
