If you don't mind, I'd highly recommend architecture books by Christopher Alexander, Pattern Language and Timeless Way of Building. (I've got a bunch of other architecture books on my "To Read" list, but can't get a hold of them yet)
I'd appreciate ... As a layman, I am always puzzled about the absence from the canon of Christopher Alexander's A pattern language. I also like William Whyte's The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces, Jan Gehl's Life Between buildings and Stewart Brand's How buildings learn.

Robert I had a Barny Noble coupon to use at a brick and mortar. I was pretty sure it was going to go for A Pattern Language, but I got side-tracked by The Horse, the Wheel, and Language by David W. Anthony which decided to come with me. Then it turned out they didn't have A Pattern Language.
