18) American Creation. A very suprising find. I was not aware this book existed until I bought it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very good takes one some important portions of the early republic that we don't often delve into deeply. 243 more for 7520. Still no ER. Thanks for the review. I have American Creation on my To Read list--and I own it; I'll be adding Founding Brothers to my Wishlist now. I'll skip the Gordon Wood book. I appreciate the way you not only steer me to good reads, you also help me avoid mediocre (or worse) ones! :-)
ETA I also ... ... to see the oft-neglected Burr and Paine included, I would not recommend this too highly. Ellis’ Founding Brothers and American Creation cover similar ground in a more understandable manner. I have heard good things about Gordon Wood and I and will probably try reading some of his other ... I have both American Creation and Founding Brothers on my TBR for next year. Now I think I will read them in that order. I like to save the best for last. :-) 61. American Creation by Joseph Ellis. Written in the style of Ellis' Founding Brothers but not quite as good. He discusses the Revolution, the debate over the Constitution, and the Louisiana Purchase amongst other things.
Overall a good book but I disagreed with one major point. Ellis ... ...
I have also read a number of books where Washington is a critical character, including Founding Brothers by Ellis and American Creation also by Ellis ... and the Birth of an Obsession, Andrea Wulf

In American Creation, Ellis views the birth of the United States through six keypoints from 1776-1803. I find Ellis to be very readable, and he often looks at American history from a different ... Hey, I'm all caught up! I'm currently reading American Creation by Joseph J. Ellis, and spending a good bit of time talking with my 10-year-old about the American Revolution (which she's been studying at school--they recently did a 2-day field trip to Boston). ... his histories and particularly like his "vignette" approach. After reading FB, I'll bet you will want to jump right into American Creation. ... Jim, Ellis has written extensively about America around the time of the Revolution and I highly recommend his books. His American Creation, His Excellency: George Washington, and Founding Brothers are all excellent if you want to read further about this time period in American history. ... War period are worthwhile. Besides the book on Washington mentioned above, I would recommend Founding Brothers and American Creation. I know he has written others, but these would be a good place to start.
