Jack is an Army Ranger who has been in love with Carolyn since he was a boy who lived at the local shelter where Carolyn volunteered. But she is a rich girl and he is determined to make something of himself. After 12 years, Jack's step-father dies and leaves a fortune so he goes back to see if he can find Carolyn. She has had a rough 12 year. Her parents were killed on Christmas day in a car wreck and her younger brother was severely injured. He dies 2 months before Jack's return. Jack is ready to rescue Carolyn but ends up with some having to protect Carolyn from a man from Jack's past. Good book. Sexy and romantic. The only thing I didn't like was the abrupt ending. ( )

I thought this novel was horrible, and rarely do I think a novel is THAT bad.

The plot wasn't very wholesome, and even though I realize that it's not supposed to be the main focus of the novel, I was very disappointed in the lack of development. Basically, you'd get a little sex scene that wasn't very entertaining in the first place, and then you'd get a page or two on what's actually going around outside of the couple's little Christmas vacation with each other. I didn't think it was entertaining or interesting in the slightest. The ending threw me off as well. It happened so quickly, and it was very anticlimactic.

Overall, this novel was quite disappointing. ( )

YUM, very, very, very HOT. Lots of build up and sexual tension before the sex scenes. Jack has been in love with the heroine for 12 years, but when he comes back in her life she doesn't recognize him (he was just a teenager then and she was very rich). Caroline has lost her parents and brother and is barely making ends meet. She takes in boarders to help pay for the upkeep on the old mansion she lives in and Jack approaches her about renting a room. She needs comfort and Jack provides it. There is a back story about blood diamonds related to Jack's previous work. My only complaint is that the heroine is just too perfect and beautiful. (Grade: B) ( )

In general, this is an entertaining book. Rather on the serious side, but super-sexy. The hero of the fic, Jack Prescott, is a delicious character -- capable, mysterious, dangerous. His heroine, Caroline Lake, isn't shabby, either; she's a realistic, well-developed character that garners just as much attention as her hunky counterpart. The downfall of this book is, sadly, the plot. Although an excellent premise, there's plenty of build-up and little follow through. The story is mostly character-driven, anyway, but the potential of the story is greater than the actuality. The climax is unsatisfying (pun intended) and I continue to think that Rice could have given more than she did considering the foundation she laid in earlier chapters. However, what the book lost in plot in gained in sex appeal. This one's a sizzler, for sure. Even if the author was uncommonly preoccupied with Jack's dick. Surprisingly, despite the dwindled plot I was most bugged by the fumbled editing. After a major gaff in the beginning I noticed other narrative gaps that should have been picked up and smoothed out. They don't make the book less readable, but they do detract from the polish of a final product. ( )
