A little girl is very sad about the lot in the row of houses where used to be the house of Old Man Hammer. It was old and needed to be torn down. Over the time lots of trash was heaped up in the lot. The little girl was very sad and started to clean the lot and grow some flowers there. In the end Old Man Hammer was so happy that somebody made a really nice garden out of the useless lot where once he house stood.
A very nice story about giving somebody a pleasure. ( )

City Green is about little Marcy who has the idea to make a garden in the ugly lot in her city block. She motivates all the people to help together and they finally lease the lot. They plant vegetables, flowers and herbs and everyone is happy about that. I especially liked about the story that it is based on an "an actual volunteer experience of the author" as it says in the book. The story demonstrates how important it is to help together and make a difference. City Green is a wonderful story with beautiful illustrations! ( )

Marcy and Miss Rosa start a campaign to clean up an empty lot and turn it into a community garden. I love community gardens. I always wanted to start one myself. I would read this with my students and we would start a school garden. This was such a cute book. ( )

Marcy's first-person narration accurately conveys the excitement of a community project coming together, and DiSalvo-Ryan's watercolor, pencil, and crayon illustrations depict the marvelous transformation of the brown city block into a world of many colors. The personalities of the diverse supporting characters shine through in these pictures, and sharp-eyed readers can follow these characters' stories along with Marcy
