Finished Absolute Friends, which was very good. Seems Le Carre was very angry at the Bush admin when he wrote it.
Still plowing through Les Miserables. Also I just bought the Harry Potter set for my son and me so that we can re-read them when we feel like it. My friend who is loaning me ... I am due to start Les Misérables today. I am also reading a John Le Carré that a friend recommended, Absolute Friends. 37. Absolute Friends by John le Carré Absolute Friends and Mission song are (imo, of course) easily the two weakest LeCarre books. The Karla suite is terrific and the sequence of books circa the Little Drummer Girl were v. good. A most wanted man is EASILY his best in a good while, at least since the russia house ~ 1990 ... Fair enough. I read Absolute Friends, which I wasn't terribly fond of, and listened to The Constant Gardener, which didn't impress me but maybe would have been better had I actually read it. I'm still reading Absolute Friends by John Le Carré, I was hoping to finish it last week but didn't make as much progress as I hoped.
I've lined up Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks as my next book (my book group is reading it in April and I've already got it out from library). I'm currently reading Absolute Friends by John Le Carre; I started it a couple of weeks ago but made absolutely no progress last week. I'm hoping to finish it this week though. ... e

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold by John le Carre' I love LeCarre and haven't read Absolute Friends, so that's my pick from mallingham's library.
The Little Drummer Boy by John Le Carre
A Different Drummer by William M. Kelley
Music of a Distant Drum by Bernard Lewis
The Harp that Once by Finnbar Dunphy
The Violin by Sandra J. McNeal 62. A Small Town in Germany by John Le Carré ... by Andre Norton

A Small Town in Germany by John Le Carre
The Russia House by John Le Carre
beatles1964 ... novels), Rankin himself describes it as "a young man's book", and it shows. This is Rankin's attempt at a Graham Greene/John Le Carre style spy novel. Whilst it is by no means dreadful, Rankin made the right decision in sticking with Rebus as a series character.
The Constant Gardner by John le Carre - beautifully written story of the injustices of pharmaceutical companies towards trialing drugs in the developing world.
Painting the Darkness by Robert Goddard - brilliant tale of intrique set in Victorian times.
Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner ... ... by Caleb Carr
17.State of Fear by Michael Crichton
18. The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
19. Absolute Friends by John le Carre
Gave up on Absolute Friends because it bored me and I couldn't care less about the characters. They were all pretty whinily idealistic and full of rhetoric. Bah.
Also gave up on Company Man because it is almost exactly like every other book from him and I really can't take his soppy ... Am about 1/2 way through Absolute Friends by Le Carre, just started (again) The Curse of the Pharaohs, second in the Amelia Peabody series and also just started The Prestige on audio. Those ought to keep me busy.
Last night I started Absolute Friends by Le Carre. I haven't read anything from him in ages, so it will make for a nice change. ... - arms trade
Our game - also arms trade
The mission song - mineral exploitation, very different writing style.
Absolute friends - war on terror
These are all standalone books, can be read in any order, with or without any of his other works.
Only his coldwar spy books need to ... stopped at B&N to get The Water's Lovely - the latest Ruth Rendell. Also came out with Absolute Friends by Le Carre and The Overnight by Ramsey Cambell. Haven't read any horror in forever, so thought this might be a good way to get a dose of the heebie jeebies. #22 Absolute Friends by John le Carré (July): This is one of the best of le Carre’s books, in my opinion, a more direct and immediate story than A Perfect Spy, with many of the same elements. It has le Carré’s characteristic lonely spy, an ethical man who finds himself adrift and ... ... to it.
I purchased these three books today:
Murder Through the Ages
Death in Holy Orders by P.D. James
Absolute Friends by John LeCarre
I seem to be on somewhat of a John LeCarre trip.
I, literally, left behind Absolute Friends. It was a hard slog through the first few chapters, and then I actually set it down in the Dr.'s waiting room and forgot to pick it up again. There are no accidents. ... Came in from the Cold this afternoon, and really enjoyed it. I was concerned, because my two previous Le Carre forays--Absolute Friends and The Constant Gardener--were disappointing. But this was taut, spare, and compelling.
I am now starting Claire Tomalin's Samuel Pepys: The Uneq ... ... back)
