A list book that is not just a list book.
This one is different from others, in that the editors have taken Shakespeare's 'seven ages of man' speech as their umbrella and commissioned many insightful articles and critic's choices on topics related to those ages. For instance, under birth we get 'Innocence', childhood - school stories, rock 'n' roll in adolescence, war under adulthood, culinary delights in middle age, grumpy old men in old age, and Biography under death.
These are just a flavour of the essays, lists and shorter articles by a fine group of writers including novelists, critics, essayists, journalists, etc, that made this book a delight to dip into, and I've made many discoveries from it. ( )

Only true book addicts can find joy in books about books. While this book does list the advertised 1000 books, it also is chock full of related trivia and insightful essays. ( )

First words
If you've ever set foot in a high-street bookshop you'll have seen them: the multiple volumes of literary snake oil, with coverlines promising to supply the key to changing your life in 'minutes', 'days', or sometimes in just '12 easy steps' (it usually involves reducing your clothes size or eating algae). (Introduction)
The 'mewling and puking' infant, you may notice, gets the least space of all the 'Ages of Man' in that famous speech.

"This is not a work of reference; it doesn't prescribe a canon or tell you how to read. Instead 1000 Books to change your life celebrates the transforming power of literature. More than 50 leading novelists, writers and critics draw the arc of a life lived in books, from birth to death. With Kate Clanchy on motherhood, Ali Smith on reading as a child, and Jonathan Franzen, Jonathan Coe and Toby Litt on the volumes that changed their lives, this book is a reminder of the difference that books make."--BOOK JACKET.… (more)
