33.Number the Stars by Lois Lowry This was one of my very favorite books as a kid; we read it in school when I was nine, and from that point on, I wanted to visit Copenhagen. I second Stasia's recommendation of Number the Stars. It's very good, but a lot more simple (being juvenile) than The Giver. And for something totally lighter, I absolutely adored her Anastasia Krupnik books when I was a kid!

One of Lowry's I can whole heartedly recommend is Number the Stars, although it is classified as juvenile, not young adult like my library has The Giver. The Giver is the first book in a trilogy, but the other two books, Gathering Blue and Messenger are nowhere near it IMHO.
