... by Ken Kesey (comes from a children's rhyme)
Sometimes a Great Notion also by Ken Kesey (comes from a Leadbelly song)
The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov (comes from the Shakespeare play Troilus and Cressida)
The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck (comes from Macbeth) ... I first started out on usenet, I used my real name.
I eventually decided that a nickname was in order and was reading The Gods Themselves so picked dua.
I discovered a couple of years later that Dua is a form of prayer in Islam, which somehow didn't seem terribly appropriate for a Christ ... There's Isaac Asimov's The Gods Themselves. An alien race that has three sexes. I haven't read that one yet myself, so don't have much more in the way of details for you. An old-school classic, The gods themselves by Isaac Asimov, fits the bill. The Gods Themselves is a unique work by Asimov. It isn't one of the Empire or Robot works... in that way it's like The End of Eternity (which unfortunately, got tied into Empire/Robot at the end...)
The aliens in that book are truly, wonderfully alien. If Asimov wrote all of his books like ... ... really is. He was the best first-draft-writer in the business, but he rarely went beyond that first draft. (I think his The Gods Themselves transcended his other work by a mile, but that's a different story.)
As to the behavior between husband and wife, Asimov was used to writing for ... >76 Cliff, have you ever tried The Gods Themselves? I slogged through the Foundation series too, but the latter was, IMHO, pretty damn good.
And Jack Vance WAS Ellery Queen, for four or five novels at least....*smirk*.
Something Wicked This Way Comes is a quote fromShakespear
The Gods Themselves (and it's section titles) comes from a quote by Friedrich Schiller
Brother to Dragons, Companion to Owls is from the Bible (Job 30:29 apparently)
Once Upon a Time is a pretty standard fairy tale opening
... ... indicated there, but this list seems to show only
Pebble in the Sky
I, Robot
Caves of Steel
Naked Sun
The Gods Themselves
Foundation's Edge
and so seems to be incomplete.
It also shows some later Doubleday "Signed limited editions" which might be the same ... #39
I don't think Asimov had all that many great books in him - probably just The Gods Themselves. The others ranged from good to not so good. Although special mention must be made of the original Foundation books but you would need all three of them.
I also think you are right that it ... ... translation issues here, the book was definitely worthwhile and would definitely fit what you are looking for ... as would The gods themselves by Asimov ... ... and novels. I never got very excited about the novels he wrote in the 80s and 90s. I'll second KromesTomes mention of The Gods Themselves as one of his best works.
As a scientist I love the way he was able to explain science to non-experts. I've had experience in just how difficult ... I'll toss out one I loved that doesn't seem to get a lot of mention: The gods themselves!
