This is a story about a poky puppy who lets his curiosity get the best of him and instead of listening to his mother or keeping up with his siblings he finds himself in without dessert. This is a classic Golden Book that is best for readers who are ready for longer pages and less pictures. While there are pictures on every page, some of the pages have long paragraphs, so I would not suggest this as a picture book for preschoolers to listen to as they will become bored after a few pages. The lesson that goes along with the book is a good one for children as it teaches to listen to parents and when you do listen, you will have a reward. ( )Number 1 best-selling children's book of all time The Poky Little Puppy is a classic book. I grew up reading this and it is one of my son's favorites as well. It shows how he is always behind his brothers and sisters and he keeps getting all the dessert, but it eventually catches up with him and he doesn't get any. This book shows children that there are eventually going to be consequences for their actions, even if they go unnoticed for a while. They can use the cute illustrations to learn tocount as well. I would use this book as a tool to show that actions have consequences. I would show them that they might be able to get away with things for a while but it will eventually catch up with them. "The Poky Little Puppy's Counting Book" is a beginning reader's counting book. The book is structured as a board book that has been cut in a rounded shape around the puppy's profile. The smooth curving shape of the book is followed by the soft chalk like colors in the illustrations. Each page contains an Arabic number from 1 to 10 with a like number of a variety of animals to match the number. The cardinal number is included in the description of what the animals are doing on each page. I feel the book is very appropriate for a source of introducing counting to a child. The size and shape of the book are welcoming in its curved shapes and soft colors. The animals used to demonstrate the number are all animals that would be familiar to an early reader. In the classroom the children could be encouraged to find other objects to place in groups to match a number. Since the book is about animals and outdoor activities, the teacher could arrange a field trip into a local yard or play ground to see how many different items could be “counted”. What is it about The Poky Little Puppy that has such lasting appeal? Is it the way the naughty puppy siblings repeatedly sneak through the fence into the wide, wide world? Is it the way they count themselves at the top of the hill, “one, two, three, four,” and discover that the fifth, the Poky Little Puppy of the title, is missing, every single time?
