I did enjoy Travels with Charley, partly because it's an interesting snapshot of 60s North America but it is also a great memoir (as all great travelogues should be!). Steinbeck does have a ... re: Steinbeck Tortilla Flat is terrific, as is everything else Steinbeck wrote. Possibly excepting The Red Pony I hated Steinbeck for decades because I was forced to read The Red Pony 3 times in school. I HATED that book. Years later, my son read & loved Of Mice and Men. In this small but mighty Steinbeck book of short stories we get to meet Jody, his ma and pa and the ranch hand, Billy Buck. All four stories are coming of age stories about Jody as he learns life's harsh lessons about the ... ... (I hope I got the name right, I remember seeing it in the "I finished the 999" thread but I'm not going back to check). The Red Pony was a short book and an enjoyable leisurely (to savor the atmosphere of "being" Jody) read. I would recommend it. I remember hating Steinbeck in high school ... I finished The Red Pony by Steinbeck. The simple stories are well-written and truly give the feel of what it was like to be a 10 year old living on a ranch back then.

I was thinking the same thing. Except I would replace The Pearl and The Red Pony with those two. I count myself fortunate in that Tortilla Flat was my introduction to Steinbeck, after that I read everything by him I could get my hands on.

I have always hated John Steinbeck's The Red Pony. I agree The Red Pony and The Pearl are probably the most difficult of Steinbeck's works to get into, but much of his other stuff is very good.
