This is an amusing and very explicit book to help explain the classic birds and bees questions asked by children. The only drawback to the Spanish edition is that they did not revamp the illustrations to reflect Latino-looking people...so lots of blond and blue-eyed people abound. Gladys found it interested, and we read to her several times before it got "old."

Book #1 - A Challenged title (http://ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbookswee...)

What a wonderfully informative and beautifully illustrated non-fiction book about the wonder of procreation. Why this 1973 book got placed on the Banned Books List in 2000 is a shame but certainly a boon for sales to the creators and publisher of this book.

Unfortunately, reading the text will reveal the apparent reasons for its banning. It's just too blatant and alarming for individuals of a prudish nature. Dad and Mom are shown, on several occasions, in the buff, and actually making love in bed. Add to that the mention of such heinous words as "vagina", "penis", "sperm", and "intercourse" and what their roles are in making a baby, and you have more than enough of a basis to call for a ban.

On the contrary to this book banishment, the story of conception is done through artful illustrations tastefully done and a language that is frank but understanding of the age group, elementary to middle schools. In fact, it is my opinion that high schoolers, who would scoff at the pictures, could certainly benefit from the information presented.

This is a special and important book that needs to be shared with all children, 6 to 18, or older. ( )

When my kids were little, this book sat on their bookshelf along with their other picture books. We read it together, and they had access to read it on their own whenever they wanted to. I heartily recommend it. ( )
