I have Mistress of the Art of Death in my car CD players, Dreamers of the Day on my work MP3 player, The Dog Department in my "lunch at work" shelf, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on my book table, and The Brothers Karamazov ... ... the story was so compelling I turned it into a project, reading first Gertrude Bell, then Janet Wallach's book, onto Dreamers of the Day (without the background, this would have been meaningless, and finally The Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Have fun.

After I read Dreamers of the Day last month, several of you recommended The Sparrow. It wasn't in when I went to the library, so I got A Thread of Grace instead.

Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell; this got adverse reviews, but I have read her other three books and feel I owe her one, a lot.
Robert CMT - I agree about the end of Dreamers of the Day. I would have been happy if she had ended the book when Agnes left Egypt. And I had a little trouble suspending disbelief long enough not to be bothered that Agnes just happened to befriend Churchill, Lawrence, Gertrude Bell, and a German spy all ... I really, really loved A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell but thought Dreamers of the Day was a clunker. My reactions were very similar to yours though so I might've been too harsh. I felt like it went down hill badly at the end, and that she happened to be right in the middle of it all, ... I had heard that Sparrow was sci-fi. I don't read a lot of sci-fi, but I liked Russell's writing so much in Dreamers of the Day that I'll definitely give Sparrow a try. I'll let you know what I think! The Secret of ... My clunker of the year award goes to Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell. It was nowhere near as good as A Thread of Grace - perhaps my expectations were just too high. The first half was pretty good, but I found the main character really irritating by the end. ... tain.
It's not normal for me to give this many 5 star books - I look like an easy grader! The most recent dud I read was Dreamers of the Day, but that was before I started writing my books up here. ... but I didn't think it came anywhere near the level of Russell's first two book; consequently, I've put off reading Dreamers of the Day.

The Golden Lotus - this was in the same catalog (Touchstone ... 46. Dreamers of the Day byMary Doria Russell. An excellent book. Unlike many people who've read this, I liked the ending. At its core, this is a book about the machinations of war. Very interesting, relevent and passionate. 1921 in Cairo Egypt with Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell. I've gotten acquainted with T. E. Lawrence, a younger Winston Churchill and his wife, Clementine, and introduced for the first time to Gertrude Bell. ... only because it expands on the themes of The Sparrow in a way that was very satisfying, at least to me.
I also read Dreamers of the Day which I thought was very good (not as good as The Sparrow, but that would be a difficult feat). It is very different from Russell's first novel ~ in ... #125 -- alaska, I thought that The Sparrow was extraordinary. Definitely, as you say, troubling, and I'm intrigued that Dreamers of the Day is as unrelenting in its questioning. Have you read Children of God? I'm interested to hear opinions on it, because I keep looking at it but have yet to ... ... haven't read any of his stuff, but it sounds wonderful. I have The Virginian somewhere in my stack.
I am working on Dreamers of the Day which I am loving. #120 Whisper1: Dreamers of the Day just came out a couple months ago. Since I haven't yet finished, please take the following with a grain of salt: as far as I can tell, story-wise/genre-wise, this book has little in common with The Sparrow. This has been a not-infrequent complaint about ... ... when it was first published. I remember it was a very spiritual, but disturbing book to me.

I'm currently working Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell. I loved The Sparrow, also by Russell; it was my favorite book of 2007. This one is distinctly different. Much more historical fiction, with the setting in 1920-ish Cairo. It explores British influence upon the Post WWI ... ... around the boxes? lol Mine was a mess for about a month before I finally got it (mostly) put away.
BTW, I agree that Dreamers of the Day is no The Sparrow, but I did enjoy it a lot when I read it a few weeks ago. ... the library because it looked interesting

The Translator: A Tribeman's Memoir of Darfur 21. Dreamers of the Day: a novel by Mary Doria Russell. 8 stars. LT. This novel was a delight to read, even though the ending was just a little strange. In fact, I'm not sure why she wrote it that way. I suppose so she could comment on recent events, as the story takes place from about 1 ... ... Muse. I will write a review in the next couple of days. I just traded my copy of The Story of Forgetting for an ARC of Dreamers of the Day and that is a book I am really excited about!
