... unacceptable today. It must have been incredibly difficult to live with a secret like that. #20 "Dreamers of the Day" by Mary Doria Russell is a fascinating story. Dreamers of the Day To take the premise of a nobody hobnobbing with Lawrence of Arabia and Winston Churchill (and a German spy) while they shape the Middle East after WWI, and make it both exciting and believable is an amazing feat. I'd have left off the final chapter, but it does serve to ...

I read Dreamers of the Day after I read two lives of Gertrude Bell, so it went smoothly, but I thought I would not have developed the respect I have for Mary Doria Russell if it had been the first book of hers that I read. I don't see the same failure of Children of God that others seem to ...

I loved The Sparrow too. In fact I have enjoyed all her books so far (still have to read Dreamers of the Day). I also think that the follow up, Children of God isn't in the same league as the Sparrow.

70. Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell. An interesting story of a schoolteacher in the early part of the 20th century who receives an inheritance and decides to go to the Middle East, where her sister had been a missionary. She meets up and hobnobs with T. E. Lawrence, Winston Church ...

I really, really loved A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell but thought Dreamers of the Day was a clunker. My reactions were very similar to yours though so I might've been too harsh. I felt like it went down hill badly at the end, and that she happened to be right in the middle of it all, ...
