I second Birdsong. Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake and Interpreter of Maladies also come to mind.

... lost total track of the time, *yawn*). I rather liked The Namesake but not as much as her collection of short stories, The Interpreter of Maladies, which I thought was just excellent. (It did win the Pulitzer Prize.) And, jubby, I seem to have left poor old Margaret Olley by the wayside! ...

I loved, loved, loved both Interpreter of Maladies and Unaccustomed Earth!

Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri Lahiri's first book of short stories, Interpreter of Maladies, was one of my favorite books the year I read it, and I still think back on some of the stories in it. Unaccustomed Earth, while it didn't have as much of an impact on me, is still a very ...

4. Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri I'll admit it -- I bought Interpreter of Maladies for the sole reason that I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. And come-to-find-out, this collection was one of the best purchases I've made this year. One day I'll eat these ...

... was already on my TBR but I'm even more keen to read it now - also so pleased you liked Unaccustomed Earth. I loved Interpreter of Maladies, bought on the basis of one of the stories which appeared in the New Yorker during the magic year I actually had a subscription (too expensive in ...

A couple I do not need to add to the Continent: Interpreter of Maladies and Mudbound, but only because they are already there!

... next time I buy a new book, it will be one by Barbara Kingsolver! #24 - BDB, I am looking forward to your thoughts on Interpreter of Maladies. #26 - Linda, with all the positive reviews for Kingsolver, I think we both need to try one of her books! #27 - Luna, All Quiet on the Western ...

... Kingsolver I have read and I really enjoyed it. There are glimpses of the same themes that Gilead features. Cait, Interpreter of Maladies is on the TBR list for the next couple of months. I'll let you know. My wife raved about it.

#124 - Great! I totally loved Unaccustomed Earth - I am looking forward to seeing how it compares to Interpreter of Maladies. #123 - Well, I am glad you don't think I did anything wrong - my dad always shakes his head when I bring home a new book :)

Cait - Great review of Unaccustomed Earth. I read it earlier this year, and I really liked it too. I highly recommend Interpreter of Maladies too, although I liked Unaccustomed Earth just a little better. The Namesake, Lahiri's novel, is excellent too, although I think she's best in the ...

... my opinion, the strongest stories in the book - though all eight narratives are wonderful. I went looking for Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies yesterday after reading a favourable review of it here on LT. Alas, my book store did not have it in stock, so I picked up Unaccustomed Earth ...

I am a huge fan of both Lahiri collections! Unaccustomed Earth was one of my Top Reads of 2008 and Interpreter of Maladies made the list in 2007. Well done, Cait. Of course you weren't doing anything wrong!! There, there...

I really enjoyed your review of Interpreter of Maladies, so today when I had about 5 hours to kills between meetings and dinner plans, I went to Chapters to look for it. They didn't have it, but they did have Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth. I read the first 3/4 of the book sitting in the store (t ...

... but I've been meaning to one day. I finished Elsewhere. Current reads are Persuasion (Austen) and Interpreter of Maladies (Jhumpa Lahiri). The former is the best book I've read all year (then again, I've read it at least 15 times), and the latter is excellent. Next ...

Hehe! For once you've written a review that is not going to lengthen my wishlist. That's because I've already read Interpreter of Maladies and also loved it.

20) Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (review)

... can't exactly pin down why. Perhaps the characters are more real and believable on the second meeting . . . Next up is Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. Short stories and a Pulitzer prize winner.

Kathi, I also enjoyed Interpreter of Maladies and, on the Indian theme, must get back to The Inheritance of Loss.

... stories from Unaccustomed Earth with no more than one a day so as to draw the experience out a bit. I did the same with Interpreter of Maladies. I was just like you, kambrogi, in not being a fan of short stories...and I would still have trouble focusing on an entire collection at one time. ...

... and if you really must read Unaccustomed Earth, her more recent collection of short fiction. It's just as wonderful as Interpreter of Maladies.

Thanks for your review of Interpreter of Maladies. I first heard about Lahiri in a TIME magazine article and was curious about her works. Your favourable review pushes her higher up my TBR list. =)

^^^ I hope you enjoy it. 12.The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri I found it to be quite interesting, I'll be reading The Namesake soon. But next I'm ready to tackle something longer, I'm thinking either Swann's Way or Moby Dick. Je ne sais pas!!

Orangeena and Bonnie--It looks like I will have to read Unaccustomed Earth and Interpreter of Maladies. I purposely avoided those because I am not a big fan of short stories and don't usually read them without a specific and enthusiastic recommendation. I have read The Namesake by her, ...

#179, 180, etc - At the risk of beating a dead horse, regarding the Lahiri discussion above, I am a great fan of her's but The Interpreter of Maladies is probably my least favorite of her books. I also don't consider myself a fan of the short story but I absolutely loved Unaccustomed Earth! ...

I think Interpreter of Maladies is one of the best collections of short stories by a single author. arubawoman, have you talked about Property yet?

... (I'm sure you know what I mean, but I don't want to include spoilers). That said, your comments make me look forward to Interpreter of Maladies. I, too, am not usually a short story fan, but the book has received such accolades that I didn't want to pass it by.

168: msf59 & 172: jhedlund I've read Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies and absolutely loved it, too -- in fact, I read the whole thing in one long afternoon this past winter! Her voice is so lyrical and stunning . . . what I love about it is what I love about The Namesake, too -- the small ...

... - Huh, I was a bit underwhelmed with The Namesake. I thought it was good, but not great. I've heard great things about Interpreter of Maladies though, so I will try her again. I'm curious what you loved about the book. I'm always interested when people's perspectives are different from ...

... and immigrants as they try to reconcile their family traditions and a new culture. Unaccustomed Earth is her most recent. Interpreter of Maladies also excellent - both short stories. They both make an interesting generational change after stories of the Raj.

Oh, me again. I have read 31. I can't seem to find a copy of Interpreter of Maladies (2000). That would finish up this decade for me. I am sort of working backwards, but not exactly. I need two more from the 90's and the further back I go the more I need to read.

Moved this tally to post #2.

I choose Interpreter of Maladies, from the library of AMQS. I may even add that to my Everestian TBR pile. (Yes, I think Everest-ian is a newly coined word).

The last three books I bought (last Saturday) were The Thirteenth Tale by Diane setterfield, The Interpreter of maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. What shall I read first? Right now I am in the middle of The meaning of night by Michael ...

SqueakyChu and Opinicus, I would concur that Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies outclasses The Namesake. Not to give the impression that the latter is bad - it is a worthy novel, but the short story collection is exceptional.

The Namesake was good, but have you read Interpreter of Maladies, allthesedarnbooks? I'm not a huge fan of short stories (I like to settle down and get comfortable with characters, and short stories pass by too quickly for me), but these were fantastic.
