A rather pointless murder mystery that has no compelling characters, interesting plot or even remotely interesting context. Set in rural Maine with a focus on small town life and Scottish traditions, the murder of an old school teacher causes some distress for our heroine who comes home ( ) This was a cute cozy read. I liked most of the characters and their interplay with each other. I also liked that Liss was a character on the outside of the small town, in a way. She was returning "home" to the small town where events were taking place so she wasn't completely accepted. Some details were missing from the story that I would have liked to read about, but I really enjoyed the story and writing so I'll continue to check out the series. The first book in the Liss MacCrimmon cozy mystery series. A strong first outing for this series and the lead character and I really enjoyed it. The mystery worked really well and was believable, the excuse to have our civilian hero investigating a crime worked well for me eve if it was, as usual, a bit contrived and anticipate enjoying and the characters were fun and engaging and the romance actually worked really, really well for me. I am enjoying the town of Moosetookalook, the promise of the ongoing characters and I really found myself liking Lilss MacCrimmon herself. I started this series with book seven and read this one second and it was interesting to see how much growth there was in the series from book one to book seven, and I enjoyed the characters I met in book seven so much I am really looking forward to meeting them in more detail as the books go forward. Strong debut and an enjoyable protagonist. I was tickled that her name was "Amaryllis;" what the heck was her mother thinking? I was put in mind of Hyacinth, Rose, Daisy and Violet, but that's not really to the point. :) The mystery was well plotted, story moved well, enough clues for the reader without erring on the side of giving it away prematurely. no reviews | add a review
