Volume four is an emotional mess of flashbacks, mostly from Zero's point of view. We learn much more about who new student Maria Kurenai is, as well as her connection to Zero. As if these new revelations don't complicate things enough, it seems as though Kaname is up to something as well. The majority of this adds up to a lot of drama for poor Yuki, who just wants the people in her life to be happy and well.

It's in this volume that you really get a sense of who Zero is and why he's been filled with so much antipathy throughout the previous three volumes. After knowing about his past, it's much easier to find his bleak outlook and negative attitude understandable, and though his character does not seem less melodramatic, it is at least understandable.

On the other hand, Kaname becomes creepier by the moment and it's hard to trust that his intentions are sincere concerning Yuki, due to his intensely stalker-like behavior and inability to treat her like anything more than a doll or a piece of his property. At this point I would much rather see Zero and Yuki hook up if there is going to be any relationships confirmed at all.

There isn't as much from side characters in this volume, but Aido and Kain are charming and I always enjoy when they make an appearance. ( )

This volume is about a new student is joining cross academy. Who is she? How does she know Zero? Her name is Maria and she is also a vampire. In this volume you will know why she is there. Also how she knows Zero. You will also see what Yuki will do for Zero. Also how Kaname will erase Yuki memories.

You should read the Vampire Knight series. If you like books about mystical things, love triangle, and some unhappy/happy endings. Then this is the series for you. You will figure out a few things here and there. There is also a tv show for the books too. This is why you should read Vampire Knight series.

There are more flashbacks in this volume, but from Zero's past this time, involving Maria. There's some drama and suspense here. It didn't quite have me on the edge of my seat but it did keep me seated throughout the whole volume. Artwork is still great, detailed and consistent, and the story is progressing nicely. I'll definitely be sticking with this one to see where it leads. ( )
