This book takes place in Chinatown in New York. Mr. Kang and his grandson are celebrating his birthday and he expresses his want for a specific type of bird: a Hua Mei. Hua Mei birds are traditionally kept as pets in China. This book does a good job of demonstrating a unique feature of another culture. This is a very different plot of a story. My favorite part of this book is the illustrations. They are not the usual paintings, but rather a paper collage. ( )
