Ok, despite some ridiculous plot points, and how the hero kept threatening to beat the heroine (it was just weird), I gave this four stars.

Fat heroine? Check
Abused/raped/traumatized heroine? Check
Disabled/scarred heroine? Check
Insecure heroine? Check
Hot sex? Check. Like half of the book is sex scenes. Though, I could have done without the anal sex tbh, I’m not judging the act, more that I am not keen on the hero pushing that when his wife is a severely traumatized multiple rape survivor who I honestly don’t think can give enthusiastic consent to rough, kinky, anal sex without some therapy and ability to form boundaries. This is why I don’t read BDSM erotica

A lot of the plot revolves around meek Jenna, who is horribly traumatized from abuse, coming out of her shell and realizing she deserves love. One of my favorite tropes. The hero wasn't terribly good at helping, I actually rolled my eyes at him a few times - he knew exactly what was going on with Jenna and still said insensitive stuff *all the time* - but overall, there were too many of my favorite themes for me not to like this. I wanted to like Promises Prevail, but I just couldn't connect with the characters. I thought Clint was a jerk (at first anyway) and even though there was a very valid reason why Jenna was submissive, I wasn't able to empathize with her. I skimmed all of the sex scenes and just wanted to know how the resolution of her past was going to be played out. The abuse was hard to read, but the story had a nice ending. However, I don't plan on reading anymore books in the Promises series. ( )

Its rare that I find a book that both makes me uncomfortable, yet fills a void. This one does. Realistic, in a literary way, pithy, the author has woven a touching and engrossing story of sex, love and courage that becomes one woman's saving grace, and one man's redemption. This story contains some things that might be uncomfortable - anal sex, and some glorification of pain, which is problematic for me as a survivor, and makes me wish that 4.5 stars was an option. However, much of it is somewhat mitigated by the plot and the excellent characterization of the relationships between the main characters. ( )

I loved books 1 and 2 in the series. This one didn't do it for me. Just couldn't get into the H/h for some reason and found myself skimming through it just so I could say I finished it. ( )

Book description
Wyoming Territory 1870:

Jenna never planned on getting married again, not only because her first husband had been a brutal monster, but because no man would want a crippled barren woman, but when fate sends her a helpless little baby to love, Jenna vows to do whatever she needs to in order to keep her daughter, even marrying Clint McKinnely. Big, dark and simmering with a deadly intensity, the exotically handsome ex marshal could put fear into the devil. He certainly strikes fear into her, but though she accepts his offer of marriage in the same practical vein it's made, Jenna soon discovers the man behind the reputation is a man like no other. A man to whom a woman could trust her heart.

Clint McKinnely is a man made hard by life, burned out by the choices he's made, looking for a reason to go on. He finds one in Jenna Hennessy. Lushly plump, sweet and shy, innocent in ways that have nothing to do with inexperience, she calls to him on the deepest levels. Still, he never would have touched her except for the vagaries of fate. When the town fathers threaten to take away the daughter she loves, Clint steps forward. While he can't offer Jenna love, he can offer her a home in which to raise the baby and the child the protection that comes with being a McKinnely. Having Jenna and Brianna in his home brings Clint a peace and satisfaction he's never known before, but even as he ferrets out the secrets that haunt Jenna's nightmares, Clint keeps his own close to his chest, knowing this is temporary, because even though Jenna is a woman with an incredibly generous heart, there are just some sins a woman can't be expected to forgive.
