Hell to Pay:
On the first day of winter - a sodden, sullen dawn of the sort only Sanctuary's southern sea-whipped weather could provide - the bona fide Stepsons, elite fighters trained by the immortal Tempus himself, crept round the barracks estate held by pretenders to their unit name and defilers of all the Sacred Banders stood for.

Book description |
KEEP ONE HAND ON YOUR MONEY AND THE OTHER ON YOUR SWORD Welcome to Sanctuary, a city of outlaws and adventurers in a world of war and wizardry, peopled with colorful characters created by today's top fantasy adventure talents. In this awesome 7th volume, a fearful cold grips Sanctuary, and as the risen dead begin to outnumber the living, a new alliance that may save the war-torn Borderlands is born. On this outlaw world of the imagination, where mayhem and skulduggery rule and magic is still potent; brought to life by today's top fantasy writers, who are free to use one another's characters - but not to kill them off ... or at least not too freely!). The idea of Thieve's World and the colorful city called Sanctuary came to Robert Lynn Asprin in 1978. After many twists and turns (documented in the volumes), the idea took off - and took on its own reality, as the best fantasy worlds have a way of doing. The result is one of F& SF's most unique success stories: a bestseller from the beginning, a series that is a challenge to writers, a delight to readers and a favorite of fans.

Was interested to read Andrew Offutt’s afterword mentioning the upcoming (in 1985) standalone novels of Shadowspawn and Beyond Sanctuary which I have read in the last couple of years. ( )
