The book is a counting book, where different numbers of animals try to help duck get his foot unstuck out of the muck. He calls for help. TWO fish come.... NO LUCK! Duck is still stuck in the muck. THREE moose... NO LUCK! FOUR crickets... NO LUCK FOR DUCK. (And so on) How long will this ONE duck be stuck in the muck? With the teamwork for ALL the animals, duck finally gets out of the muck. (YAY!)

The end of a book has a "haha guess what" moment at the end. You see the duck flying off into the distance, but guess who is now stuck in the DEEP, GREEN MARSH!? ...THE MOOSE!

Phyllis Root used alliteration in this book. (EX: creaky & croaky, slippy & sloppy, messy & mossy). This can be a great thing to point out to kids.
Also, rhyming is used throughout this book. The name of the animals rhymes with what they are doing. (EX: moose & spruce, snakes & wakes, snail & trails).
This book is can also be a counting seek-and-find (for kids) meaning when they flip to each page, they can count each animal and can match it to the number written on the left side of the page. ( )

This book is full of rhyming words. It helps children with their counting skills as the duck tries to find help to get unstuck. All the animals in the story come together to find a way to help the duck who was stuck.

Read the book all the way through
Then go back through and find the words that rhyme (sound alike)

A lovely little book that mixes counting with a jaunty rhyme scheme. This is another book I always have on my classroom shelf because my students find it both hilariously entertaining, and a helpful way to remember their number sense. I love to bring this book out at the point in the school year where we are learning about counting, and I have to say that this book really helps. ( )

Book description
A great book of counting and friendship. So much fun onomatopoeia for reading aloud! So many rhymes! I like that the countable items are clear and separate (not overlapping), making the counting easier. The artwork reminds me a little of Denise Fleming's.
Haiku summary

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0763615668, Paperback)

"Splish, clomp, pleep, plop, plunk, sloosh, slosh, slink, zing." Who can resist a read-aloud featuring sounds like these? When, "Down by the marsh, by the sleepy, slimy marsh, one duck gets stuck in the muck," who comes to the rescue? Two fish, splishing, for starters. Then three moose clomping, four crickets pleeping, and so on. Still, "No luck. Still stuck." It takes a whole lot of teamwork to get this particular stuck duck unstuck from the muck, but this cheerful bunch is definitely up to the task.

From one duck to 10 dragonflies, the muddy fun never stops in Phyllis Root's chunky little board book. Young readers will giggle their way through the numbers, and by the time the duck's foot is released with a "Spluck!" counting will be a cinch. Jane Chapman's lush illustrations are full of marshy colors and muddy detail. The right side of each two-page spread shows the hapless duck earnestly waiting for liberation by its lively rescuers, while on the opposite side the featured number is printed, large and bold, over the text, and the splishers and ploppers are depicted again for easy counting. Chapman's enchanting art is also found in The Emperor's Egg, among other titles, and Root's other popular stories include Kiss the Cow!. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
