Breathtaking... not that she experienced such tremendous darkness but that she refused to let that keep her from giving herself completely to Jesus, to being kind always. ( )Most encouraging book I have ever read. Interesting portrayal of Mother Terese through her correspondence with spiritual directors, bishops and fellow catholics. After several chapters you get a good understanding of her perspective and suffering, and the rest of the book is almost superfluous. Very inspiring book of how this amazing woman continued to serve the poorest of the poor despite her own severe spiritual dryness. This book was emotionally difficult to read, and I'm certain my comments will be totally inadequate to convey the deep faith of a true saint. It took me weeks to finish this because I needed respite from the raw suffering she underwent. What is most remarkable is that Mother Teresa herself relates her "gift" of suffering in her own words through her many letters. She wanted to keep these letters private, but her wishes were overridden. That is the only reason that I could not give the book 5 stars. I am not Catholic, but consider this work to be an indispensible addition to anyone's spiritual growth reading. Mother Teresa was a great humanitarian as well as a saint whose life was her testimony to her love for God. After beginning her call to love and serve the poverty-stricken people in Calcutta, this devoted woman entered a five-decade period of perceived alienation and separation from God. "The darkness is so dark and I am alone -- unwanted, forsaken...how painful is this unknown pain..." After living in this darkness for many years, she comes to an acceptance that Jesus was living in and through her. Her interior darkness was a privileged way of entering into the mystery of the Cross of Christ. What an enormous faith this tiny woman had. After reading this powerful account, I am certain that Mother Teresa's light is shining on in the hearts and deeds of the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta. Let's hope that light can reach all people in their dark holes of suffering, wherever they may be. no reviews | add a review

This historic work reveals the inner spiritual life of one of the most beloved and important religious figures in history.
During her lifelong service to the poorest of the poor, Mother Teresa became an icon of compassion to people of all religions; her extraordinary contributions to the care of the sick, the dying, and thousands of others nobody else was prepared to look after has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Little is known, however, about her own spiritual heights or her struggles. This collection of her writing and reflections, almost all of which have never been made public before, sheds light on Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth and intensity of her holiness for the first time.
Compiled and presented by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., who knew Mother Teresa for twenty years and is the postulator for her cause for sainthood and director of the Mother Teresa Center, MOTHER TERESA brings together letters she wrote to her spiritual advisors over decades. A moving chronicle of her spiritual journey—including moments, indeed years, of utter desolation—these letters reveal the secrets she shared only with her closest confidants. She emerges as a classic mystic whose inner life burned with the fire of charity and whose heart was tested and purified by an intense trial of faith, a true dark night of the soul.
Published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of her death, MOTHER TERESA is an intimate portrait of a woman whose life and work continue to be admired by millions of people.
