This was a fun read. Stargate meets mesoamerican mythology - something I've been hoping they'd take on one of these days!

The end is rather abrupt, and leaves a few dangling plot threads. The science and history/mythology are occasionally a bit sketchy (Daniel's very lucky that his research notes are too classified to be subject to peer review!). Some references to obscure episodes or to previous novels in this series seem to assume that the reader is a *hardcore* Stargate fan, while some things that even the most casual fans should know are explained in detail. And Jack's linguistic obtuseness is endearing, but it does get old after awhile. There are some proofreading mistakes, misplaced apostrophes and the like, one or two places where the narrative gets clunky, an annoying secondary character or two .... But these are all small nitpicks, and don't detract from the sheer fun of reading this story!

The melding of Aztec mythology with Goa'uld history, the Crystal Skull episode, and other elements of the Stargate mythos is utterly brilliant and inspired - an automatic three stars just for how seamlessly it all fits together! It's an excellent team story; each member of SG-1 is very well characterized and essential to the mission. The plot is gripping and well-crafted. I'd recommend this book to any Stargate fan who likes a good team fic - especially if you also have a healthy interest in mesoamerican archaeology. ( )
