  1. meggyweg recommends I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier, "Both these books are perfectly structured, all the plot parts fitting so seamlessly together that not even a knife blade could slip between them. The endings (see more) to each are as inevitable as the end of the world."
  2. SkinneeJay recommends The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Both are simple and sad stories. I find the endings pretty similar."

from the introduction: Steinbek wrote in 1938 '... Try to understand men, if you understand each other you will be kind to each other.' A book of beautifully described characters and friendship. ( )

A touching short story of the less fortunate. The beginning is very warm-hearted, George and Lennie's dream about a farm of their own is attractive, concrete and has a lot of value in our modern "virtual" world. The ending grips you by the gut.

I'm glad I didn't have to read this at school. I wouldn't have liked it at all. It's full of little openings of deep themes, many of them about the complications of human relations and the use of power. I liked the play-like structure of the book with a clear scene separation and distinct scenery for each. The description of nature is very "calming".

I ought to digest this experience for a while and re-read the book shortly. ( )

Sometimes good people do bad things - because they don't know any better, or because they know they have to. ( )

I read this in ninth grade. Steinbeck is such great required reading. My mom still remembers when I read this book, that I came out of my room in tears when I was through. It was the first book that ever made me cry. The imagery and the characters have stuck with me ever since. ( )

Hated it. I really don't understand why he is such a celebrated author. ( )

To Americans whose eyes are still smarting from the unhappy ending of the Wall Street fairy tale of 1929, John Steinbeck's little dream story will not seem out of line with reality; they may even overlook the fact that it too is a fairy tale. An oxymoronic combination of the tough & tender, Of Mice and Men will appeal to sentimental cynics, cynical sentimentalists.

"Of Mice and Men" is a thriller, a gripping tale running to novelette length that you will not set down until it is finished.
