#135: That is a toughie, Mac. I really liked the vignette quality of Tortilla Flat, loved the characters in Of Mice and Men - although I was not happy with how it ended, thoroughly enjoyed the Steinbeck's obvious love of the community in Cannery Row. There is really no clear favorite for me!

I read Of Mice and Men and loved it. This is one of the bleaker Steinbeck novels, isn't it? But it had its bright spots, too. I love the way Steinbeck writes about friendship. I'm reading Night Flight now. Very atmospheric.

Of Mice and Men is one of my least favorite books I have ever read, but East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath are in my top 5, and The Moon is Down is up there as well. Schools should use The Moon is Down instead of Of Mice and Men - short, engaging, and a history lesson all in one!
