A Southern legal mystery and a real page turner. ( )

This was a really intriguing, fast-paced legal thriller. I had seen the movie before reading the book, but all the same I was kept on my toes, just as everyone else (in the book) was.

John Grisham has a knack for making the law interesting. I have only disliked one of his books so far, and I think that was a fluke. He must have been sick that day and his secretary wrote that one. But this one is one of the better ones I've read and takes us on a roller-coaster of jury tampering and tobacco litigation all in one book. Fun stuff! ( )

Mummy recommeded I read this book as I am very anti Big Business and I loathe the way Big Business seeks to evade social justice and in my observations brilliant products and excellent Customer service.
A Brilliant well written book. ( )

The Runaway Jury is a highly original and entertaining work -- intriguing and suspenseful, with unexpected plot twists and an unpredictable ending. I found the abridged audio book is a fine way to enjoy it. At 6 hours, it clearly must have left out text, but the abridgement left no noticeable gaps in the story line. I would certainly recommend the audio version, and if I had it to do over, would go with the unabridged version.

Readers familiar only with the movie version may be surprised to find a very different court case (against a tobacco company, not a gun manufacturer) and protagonists with different motives. To say more than that would give away the plot. Enjoy! ( )

Pretty good but you have to like reading about court cases. Good characters and great twists. I quite enjoyed this. ( )

Epigraph
Every jury has a leader, and the verdict belongs to him.
Dedication
To the memory of Tim Hargrove (1953-1995)
First words
The face of Nicholas Easter was slightly hidden by a display rack filled with slim cordless phones, and he was looking not directly at the hidden camera but somewhere off to the left, perhaps at a customer, or perhaps at a counter where a group of kids hovered over the latest electronic games from Asia.

Book description
Since the day his name was selected from the electoral roll, Nicholas Easter has been watched by a private army of lawyers and jury consultants. He is one of 196 prospective jurors in a civil liability trial – and not just any civil liability trial. On one side: the widow of a lung cancer victim, demanding hefty compensation. On the other: a coalition of four tobacco companies who cannot afford to lose the case. A verdict for the plaintiff will mean a disastrous cascade of litigation – so the tobacco companies have hired Rankin Fitch: a ruthless expert on juries who will do anything to win. Victory, however, will not be easy. As Fitch will soon discover, he is not the only crook trying to manipulate this jury.

Millions of dollars are at stake in a huge tobacco-company case in Biloxi, and the jury's packed with people who have dirty little secrets. A mysterious young man takes subtle control of the jury as the defense watches helplessly, but they soon realize that he in turn is controlled by an even more mysterious young woman. Lives careen off course as they bend everyone in the case to their will.
