Even though dated, it is still the most comprehensive reference grammar out there. Unfortunately, it is rooted in mid-19th century philology and understanding of language. Definitely time for a new one. (

The translation of the twenty-sixth German edition of this grammar, originally prepared by the Rev. G. W. Collins and revised by me, was published in 1898.

§ 1. The Semitic Languages in General
1. The Hebrew language is one branch of a great family of languages in Western Asia which was indigenous in Palestine, Phoenicia, Syria, Mesopotamia, Babylonia, Assyria, and Arabia, that is to say, in the countries extending from the Mediterranean to the other side of the Euphrates and the Tigris, and from the mountains of Armenia to the southern coast of Arabia.
