magelet87: Not only do both have fantasy elements, they are written by authors who are wonderful and brilliant. They write strong female characters who are kick-@ss; who dont need saving. They do a most of the saving, in fact. Also, both books are GLBT inclusive. Magic, wonderful creatures, strong, independent young women who dont accept the hand they are dealt in life, so they set about to change their place in the world. In fact, this description can work for any book by either author.… (more)

Another pretty strong entry in this series, though it was tougher to get invested in the counterfeiting mystery than it was in the previous book's hunt for a child killer.

It was interesting to explore Port Caynn and get a few more hints about Goodwin's character.

I liked Dale, though I had a sense of foreboding about his relationship with Beka that turned out to be completely misplaced. I expected that he would be outraged by Beka's deception, especially considering it got his friend's killed. But instead he seems to have no reaction to any of this - did he not care about Hanse or Steen? ( )

Great plotting, and less harping on Beka's shyness to make me wince. But then there were digressions about Dale and how he made Beka feel that I still found something to roll my eyes at. However, aside from that I really enjoyed this book.

It was particularly interesting to learn that Corus's Rogue isn't the Rogue of all Tortall, and that each city had its own. I found the characters that Beka and Goodwin encounter in Port Cayne very interesting. Once the action got going, it was awesome. ( )

Pierce, Tamora. Bloodhound. Beka Cooper No. 2. Random House, 2009.
BeKa Cooper is the heroine of a YA fantasy series by journeyman fantasy author Tamora Pierce. Beka is a member of the Provosts Guard, who call themselves dogs. She has some magical ability that is enhanced by a pigeon who carries messages from the dead and a cat who is truly the god that he thinks he is. The first book, Terrier, is set in her first year as a “puppy” guard trainee. In the Bloodhound, at 17 she is a fully trained young dog. Dog metaphors abound in the Guards. To add to the confusion, she is assigned a canine partner, a scent hound named Achoo, who sneezes when he catches the target scent. The plot involves a counterfeiting ring, corrupt officials, and a romance with a smooth-talking gambler. We get most of our information from Beka’s diary, whose style is refreshingly original. Pierce is no competition for J. K. Rowling or Tolkien, but she tells a good story. 4 stars. ( )

Well. This book was better than the first one.

Is not usual to find a series where the second book is so much better than the previous one, but this does it. I really enjoyed it. It's not the most perfect and fun book ever, mind you, but its pretty enjoyable.

Unlike the previous one, this didn't feel like a Diskworld Watch book, it felt like it's own thing.

I was particularly happy with the Okha character, how s/he was on a stable and happy relationship, I found that really charming, I liked the inclusion of the Trickster God.

I like how Becka interacts with the Black God, and how she is not afraid of him, if you haven't read the book this might sound ominous, but its really not that big, she can listen to the dead, whose souls are carried by pidgeons.

I liked that apparently there was so much more going on with Pounce somewhere else that we have no idea, but that seems really important, I hope the next book explain something of that, but i'd be happy if they don't, I like when gods do gods things and mortals don't really understand it, it makes sense in this kind of world where magic and gods are so in touch with mortals.

I really enjoyed this book, and i'll recommend it to whoever wants to read a good serie with a strong and well developed main character who isnt afraid of her own sexuality nor looses her femininity. ( )

Dedication
I want to dedicate this long-delayed second volume of
Beka's adventures to my assistants,
Sara Alan and Cara Coville.
I think that without them
I might have gone just plain nuts.
I would also like to dedicate this book to
Joel Sweifach, my first accountant.
Joel, you kept my ship afloat!
