Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind
When I saw the movie adaptation of this book I remember thinking that the lead character was very Norman Bates-ish. Now that I've read this the comparison is even more accurate. In the book of Psycho, the character of Norman Bates ... I read The Virgin Suicides and Perfume: Story of a Murderer over the past two days, and now I'm actually going to try my hardest not to start anything new until Tuesday night, once I'm done with final exams and on my way back to my family for the holidays.
I have absolutely no self-c ... ... prose tired and difficult to read. This is one class-required text I'll be glad to sell back at the end of term.

The movie they made of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer was as close to the book as any I've ever seen. Except Gone With the Wind. And yes, Blood Meridian is violent and brutal, but, well, it's real writing and a real book and really worth it. I have to say I am tired of YA novels becoming ... ... new that I feel as strongly about as some of the classics I've read and loved.

I'm ... Perfume by Patrick Suskind. Absolutely disgusting. It is about a man killing and skinning charismatic girls to distill the essence of their attraction.
I don't know why I finished it because it made me feel nauseous. I suspect that I hoped that he would get his comeuppance; but he didn't ... I realise that most critics and most readers will disagree with me but I found Perfume made me want to throw up. I finished it but found it disgusting and that the anti-hero was rewarded for what he did just made it worse. ... it so that I can watch the movie later (my rule is never watching the adaptions before reading the book).
I also picked up Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (since last week actually). I watched the movie already, and that's the biggest regret of my life.

Many of these have ... I don't know a whole lot about Perfume. The Wasp Factory is pretty unique stuff. No more violent than your average historical fiction: it's the themes that it explores that seem to provoke strong reactions in people.

The Wasp Factory and Perfume are both on the list of 1001 books you must read before you die, if you follow that sort of thing. ... odd Robert J Sawyer book). The Wasp Factory is a classic and I also recommend it - it is pretty squeamish icky and like Perfume requires a strong stomach as it does challenge your sensibilities.
I really liked Peter F Hamilton's Greg Mandal books, the first book is Mindstar Rising, set ... I really enjoyed the adaptations of:

This book was given to me as a gift, and I was initially put off because murder stories aren't particularly my cup of tea. But ... ... it in college but I suspect that like War and Peace I'd take more away from it now. I'm also interested in your take on Perfume, it seems to be one of those books readers either love or loathe.

Very good, amazing imagery. I've always felt I have a better sense of smell than most people I meet and I really identified with the main character. (Although obviously I am not so depraved.) This book reminded me some of Devil in ... ... writing sci fi. Wish she'd do it more often.

I looked at the LibraryThing recommendations for Sophie's World, and can personally vouch for Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind and The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, both of which I enjoyed in high school (and still do).

I read Smilla's Sense of Snow long ago. It came out roughly at the same time that Perfume by Patrick Suskind and both of them were excellent. I guess our taste for the Scandinavians (is Denmark part of Scandinavia?) is nothing new.

ETA pesky touchstones just wont work sometimes ... of The Gargoyle and have so many books to read that I'm not going to feel guilty at all.
But, surprisingly, I liked Perfume. #155 - Although I enjoyed Perfume, some parts were a bit hard to take , especially (for me) the ending.
Just a month ago I gave up on Oates' We Were the Mulvaneys - I just don't think I was in the mood for a rambling story and I had other books that were calling to me.

And Perfumehad a certain ,um ,pungent charm.,although a bit further back than 30 years,and wouldn't want you using it as an idea of the typical Frenchman. I saw Perfume: The Story of a Murderer on cable. It was an entertaining and surreal film, Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman were great in it. So much more satisfying than the cliched slasher horror you get these days. But then again it WAS based on a work of literature. I have read Gone with the Wind.

LF: 13 Little Blue Envelopes - Maureen Johnson Started reading Perfume: The story of a murderer by Patrick Suskind. It is an excellent book so far. Am up to page 20. Have started reading Perfume: the story of a murderer by Patrick Suskind and it is very good so far, of the 12 or so pages I've read. I finished Perfume The Story of a Murderer. Couldn't sleep around 2 a.m. so started Water for Elephants and have read 104 pages so far. It is absolutely wonderful. I would never have picked it up, but that's what a bookclub's for, I guess. ... by Al Gore. It's slow going but good. I've read 4 or 5 books since starting it.
Right now my non-Al Gore book is Perfume The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. It's quite good so far. The language is lyrical - a joy to read.

As Lewycka was born in Germany, she's on my list for Germany (as was Patrick Suskind - I read Perfume earlier in the month). Finished Perfume tonight and have to say I was very impressed by it. It's surprisingly un-gruesome (I thought) and the characters are very appealing, despite the subject matter. Great imagery, writing .. but the plot (especially towards the end) was a little weak.
Am starting Perfume by Patrick Suskind this very week. I very recently watched the film and was absolutely captivated, despite the horror of the subject. Am very much looking forward to reading it... Decided to go with Perfume by Patrick Suskind next... >41: In German class. We read books from different time periods and Das Parfum was one of the choices for modern literature, if I remember correctly. I can't remember what the other choices were. I was around 18 or 19 at the time and it was by far the most interesting book on the whole list. Thalia (#40): Just curious here ... what class/school had you read Das Parfum? I read it in English, and it didn't exactly strike me as the kind of thing that would be taught in school. ... are just too many books I haven't read yet. One that I re-read occasionally and had to read for school about 5 times was Das Parfum by Patrick Süskind (touchstones doesn't want to load...). And Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse and Die Verwandlung by Franz Kafka are two more from ... ... it takes me forever to read just one because i have like no time anymore but i love the series anyway. i'm going to read Perfume by Patrick Suskind and i'm really excited because the person who handed it to me told me it was really morbid and i love morbid books which some people think is ... It's either Patrick Süskind's The Perfume (unfortunately the German touchstone doesn't work) or Michael Ende's The Neverending Story (again, the German touchstone doesn't work). I read both books in German.
I love both books. I did have to read Das Parfum several times for school, but ... ... Frevisse Medieval Mystery series (I've read most of her later ones but our library doesn't have any of the first 6 or so!)

I also have read the Sleeping Beauty novels and found the S/M elements a bit distrubing at first, but it made The Story of O less dauting. I also didn't care for Return to the Chateau as much as the original. I have all of the Anais Nin "Journal of Love" diaries except Nearer the Moon. ... franhigg: I think you have reached THE difficult part of Perfume but it does get better. ... up on books that are presents) and sailed through it!
And just to keep this relevant to the topic, I'm now reading Perfume by Patrick Suskind. So far (I'm about half-way through) it seems a real curate's egg of a book; I hope it improves.
