Here we go folks starting a fresh month and I'm beginning People of the Book for the group read. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a mystery but it could.

Well, I read People of the Book about a year ago and I set if free because a friend of mine loves historical fiction as much as I. So, I'll be borrowing another copy from the library to follow along with your discussion. My first group read as well and looking forward to it.

September of Shiraz does sound good. The author is Dalia Sofer. In The People of the Book , the profession of one of the characters is a SOFER. It means '...a scribe of God's holy language.' Interesting. You will have to let us know the reaction of your book club.

Lunacat, I think you put your finger on why I did not really like People of the Book . I did find the historical information interesting, but felt the book was overrated, and have never tried another Geraldine Brooks because of it. Maybe I should give her another try!

Thanks to the long flight delay at the airport followed by a 6 hour flight home, I managed to finish reading People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks and it was really enjoyable. I think I liked Year of Wonders more though. This was a nice read, but at times, some of the stories about the journey ...
... it so real, living so close by and knowing how closely the novel mirrors the truth of what the villagers experienced. People of the Book is now on my pile of library books waiting for me!

#50 I read People of the Book last summer and loved it. It was my first exposure to Brooks, but this year I'm planning to read some more of her stuff. Not perfect, but near enough to please me!
#135, 149, 150 - I've enjoyed both People of the Book and Year of Wonders but I liked the latter better. I loved all the little stories in People of the Book, about the imagined history surrounding the Haggadah, but I didn't care for the main character and her story so much.

I loved March and immediately went out and bought two more of her books People of the Book and Year of Wonders. I've read one since, and the other is in my "soon" stack. That's often a problem for me with new good authors--they don't publish fast enough. LOL!

I don't think you can go wrong with Tess of the d'Urbervilles. But I am nearly finished with People of the Book and cannot express enough my enthusiasm for it! Perhaps my most enjoyable read this year....
I enjoyed both People of the Book and March (though didn't really see it as a Pulitzer pick) and have heard that Year of Wonders is terrific (it's on my TBR pile), so I'll nudge that. I'll also nudge Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as a classic pick. It's so much fun.

Now on to People of the Book which grabbed me from page one. I've heard some negative and ambivalent comments about this book on LT but I've still got high hopes for it.

I read and was disappointed in the People of the Book . I had such high hopes for it, too... I'm currently reading Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin and I think I'd recommend it instead of the other one.

I was a little disappointed with this one. Overall I enjoyed it, but I guess I was expecting more from a Pulitzer winning author. And that's most likely has more to due with my expectations that the book itself.
