I have a feeling that anyone who enjoyed Mike Nelson's work on Mystery Science Theater 3000 will enjoy this book.

A collection of Mike's essays on the topic of film, this book is not only entertaining, but oftimes laugh-out-loud funny. And although his comparisons may at times be absurd, you will often find yourself agreeing with him.

A must-have for fans of MST3K, and a must-read for film fanatics. Definitely an A+ production. ( )

Mike Nelson was the head writer and second host of one of my favorite cheesey comedy series, "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (MST3K), in which Mike and three robots, marooned in space with only bad movies for diversion, watch and poke sly fun at them. It was much like my college dorm at 3:00 AM. Now he has written a quite funny book of bad movie reviews, and while I'm a little put-off that I like a couple of them (I will not deign to tell you which - why let down my guard now?), his reviews are generally on target and chock-full of comic nuggets. Although he does occasionally confuse hilarity with absurdity. But generally, Mike Nelson walks the thin line without a hitch. ( )

Personally, I consider this to be one of the most laugh-out-loud funny books I've ever read, but perhaps that's just because it's related to something that really needs no introduction: bad movies. His novel and collection of essays weren't nearly as good as this, but still:

"I can only tell you that for me, not writing about bad movies is not an option. Or rather, not not writing about bad movies isn't not an option. I guess what I'm trying to say is that not failing to not not write about bad movies isn't not a lack of being an option."

The main problem is the lack of a decent index or table of contents; if you're looking to track down a review that you want to reread, you'll have to flip around a bit. ( )

A collection of little essays about movies that is funny, but maybe like 15% less funny than his friends told him it was. Then again, people from Minnesota are just too nice: maybe he should have had someone from, say, New York read it. ( )

This book may not be as ambitious or exhaustive as The Story of Philosophy, or even CorelDRAW 7 for Dummies. (Introduction)
I hate to start this thing by nitpicking, believe me, but the movie really should have been called Lava, not Volcano.

Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0380814676, Paperback)

You might think that after ten seasons on the Peabody Award-winning TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000, Mike Nelson has seen enough bad movies for one lifetime. As the guys at Cahiers du Cinema say, au contraire! Hollywood's spigot of stupidity shows no sign of slowing, and cheesy films continue to flood our multiplexes and gunk up our home entertainment centers at an alarming rate. This dire situation calls for a specialist. A professional. An expert in wading through motion pictures so vile that they aren't released; they escape. We need Mike Nelson! Hey, settle down there, pal--you got him!

In more than sixty laugh-out-loud reviews and essays featuring his unique combination of erudite wit and shameless clowning, this screenscarred veteran takes us deep into the recesses of cinematic cheese. He examines legendary showbiz families like Culkin, Baldwin, and Estevez; uncovers an ancient quatrain in which Nostradamus foretells the coming of David Hasselhoff; makes the case for the Food Network and the Three Stooges; and skewers all kinds of movies, including Lost in Space, Twister, Anaconda, The Postman, Spring Break, My Best Friend's Wedding, The Bridges of Madison County, The Blair Witch Project, and many, many more. Here is a film critic for the rest of us: the outrageous, hilarious Mike Nelson.
