A curious collection of stories, which whilst very much of their time, are enjoyable if you allow yourself to be transported back to the London club, as many of these stories are "framed" by characters such as Leithen (from Buchan's John MacNab etc) recalling a story to their contemporaries. The stories themselves tend towards adventure or, more often, supernatural tales and for content are slight. But the writing carries them, by transporting you to another time. Curious but enjoyable, perhaps because they fill in more of the detail from Buchan's novels such as The Thirty Nine Steps and John MacNab. ( )
