Toby’s lie is, not surprisingly, about Toby’s lie, or is it? Teenage Tobias Sligh’s mother is leaving home; his father turns to the bottle; his best friend Juice is a drug dealer and he has fallen in love with new boy Ian Lamb.
Toby attends a Jesuit school, when one-eyed new boy Ian arrives in class for the first time and sits next to him he rests his knee against Toby’s and leaves it there, Toby is smitten. They secretly declare their love for one another and they plan to dance together at the school prom, but will they go through with it? Meantime Toby tries to deal with his family problems; unwittingly gets involved with Juice’s drug dealings; is pursued by a bothersome Detective; and becomes attached to a dying hospital patient. But is everything as it seems? Why has his mother left home? How did Ian loose an eye? Who really is the persistent Detective? Why does everyone seem to keep something back? Who’s telling the lies? All eventually is revealed.
This is a riotous, action packed suspense tale, thought provoking and at times quite moving. The characters are vividly drawn and appealing. I did find it took a short while to acclimatise to the pace, the quick changes of scene and Juice’s speech, but that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend it. ( )
