Perfectly delightful. Mrs. Frisby is such an endearing character and we’re with her the whole way—her motivations are absolutely clear and believable and she is brave and active and even though her ultimate problem is mostly solved by the knowledge and abilities of others (Jeremy, the owl, the rats), it is only through her perserverance and action that she gets to where the others can/will help her. (And of course she’s the one who drugs Dragon, and discovers the important information that gives the rats enough warning to make their escape from the farm.) The only thing I wondered about at the end (other than what we are intended to wonder about, like which rats died) was why Jonathan Frisby had a last name when apparently no one else did (an admittedly very small point in the larger scheme of things!). Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a wonderfully written children's book that I feel is for all ages. A quick read for those who power through them, but a sound story and very well told. ( )

Is your son super sick? Is your husband a super intelligent mouse? Mrs. Frisby son is. Timothy has a bad case of pneumonia and can’t move but what happens next is terrible for them. As Mrs. Frisby is taking a stroll she over hears that Mr. Fitzgibbon is going to plow the garden in 5 days. She starts to rush home but sees a crow that is trapped in a wire and she shuffles over to help, but almost gets eaten herself. The crow leads her to an old owl who tells about the rats of NIMH. A breed of super intelligent rats who come to help her. Can they do it? Can Mrs. Friby help them? If you want to find out you will have to read to book. ( )

I thought that it was great. I remember when Mrs. Frisby met the big crow, where she flew over the farm. I was thinking of my friend Lucy's farm. This book was exciting because when Mrs. Frisby went out, the little kids didn't follow her. The cat Dragon is mean to the mice, too. I got a little nervous and a little scared when I read this, but a little happy, too! I liked where they lived underground and then when Mrs. Frisby went to find another home, I liked that the little kids didn't go with because they didn't want to get hurt.

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0689710682, Paperback)

There's something very strange about the rats living under the rosebush at the Fitzgibbon farm. But Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with a sick child, is in dire straits and must turn to these exceptional creatures for assistance. Soon she finds herself flying on the back of a crow, slipping sleeping powder into a ferocious cat's dinner dish, and helping 108 brilliant, laboratory-enhanced rats escape to a utopian civilization of their own design, no longer to live "on the edge of somebody else's, like fleas on a dog's back."

This unusual novel, winner of the Newbery Medal (among a host of other accolades) snags the reader on page one and reels in steadily all the way through to the exhilarating conclusion. Robert O'Brien has created a small but complete world in which a mother's concern for her son overpowers her fear of all her natural enemies and allows her to make some extraordinary discoveries along the way. O'Brien's incredible tale, along with Zena Bernstein's appealing ink drawings, ensures that readers will never again look at alley rats and field mice in the same way.
