Well, my favorite book as a child was Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm. I'm afraid to read it again as an adult. What if it's not as good as I remember? To Kill a Mockingbird is great. I'll have to think about the other 8.

That sounds like Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, right down to the name of Timothy, but that book published in the early 70s and Timothy wasn't forgotten -- he had been too ill to move to the new house with the rest of his family. ETA to fix touchstone.

I cried at the end of Charlotte's Web, and even though I didn't cry I was still pretty sad at the end of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Also, an octopus was killed in Island of the Blue Dolphins and I thought that was mean. So all of those books should be banned too, ...

I was at the Fitzgibbon farm for a while with Mrs. Frisby, but now I am Elsewhere.

Now I'm reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH -- somehow I missed this one as a kid.

The Secret of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien Secret in the Sky by Kenneth Robeson Secret of the Andes by Ann Nolan Clark Keepers of the Secret by Barnaby Conrad Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie

The Westing Game, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Charlotte's Web, A Wrinkle in Time, Little House on the Prairie I'll probably think of others that would be top 5, but I went with the first 5 that came to mind. As I hit submit I thought of From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. F ...

... last year so I haven't read many of his books, but I've enjoyed them all. Small Gods sticks in my mind, and having read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH several times to assorted progeny, I find The Amazing Maurice and His Amazing Rodents hysterically funny.

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH? Probably not what you're looking for as this is a kids story, but I thought I'd throw it out there just in case.

... I was younger, I liked fantasy novels that personified animals, like Charlotte's Web, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, etc.

... such as Small Gods and The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents (this last is especially good if you've read The Rats of NIMH). The Amber Spyglass books are excellent. Homeless Bird and The Lady of Ch'iao Kuo. These are a few of my favorites.

I actually taught NIMH when I taught middle school, which is probably the only reason I have the book. It surprised me as well. I don't remember liking the movie, but it's been forever since I've seen it.

The NIMH author actually wrote more than one book?!?!? This is news to me... LOL!!! Guess I never bothered to find anything else by him... I used to watch the film version over and over and over and over (and over and over), likely to the annoyance of my parents. I don't recall being as impressed ...

... you two like it! I was surprised when I went to put it on the shelf, and realized that it's the same author who wrote Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

Finally, after all these years, got around to reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

... this was a story that (like The Hunger Games) would have been better having been wrapped up in a single book. I've got Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and The Girl Who Could Fly both on my TBR pile, but for the moment, non-YA, I'm reading Jenny Uglow's biography of Thomas Bewick, Nature' ...

21. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien I've had this one on my TBR list since it first came out back in the '70s! Read it now for the Book Awards II Challenge - it won the 1973 Newbery Medal. The story of Mrs. Frisby, the widowed field mouse who must move her family to their ...

... (It's not supposed to be released until May 26, according to its Amazon pre-order page.) Also, I finally got hold of Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

25) The idea of a sentient rat has been done before The Rats of NIMH and The Amazing Maurice and his educated rodents being two that I recall so I was intrigued to see how Firmin would address it. As normal, something goes awry and the rat gets clever: as an aside, why does the rat have to "ge ...

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is wonderful! The animated movie eviscerated the underlying meaning of the story and turned it into a simple children's tale, but the book is a marvelous exploration of intelligence and responsibility in a highly accessible story--one of my very favorites. Mis ...

I read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH many years ago but I loved it. I think I read it several times.

I'm working through Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which I haven't read since I was teeny -- I just rewatched the lovely animated film of it and it made me want to revisit the book.

... of us all reading together (which I guess is kind of strange!) From elementary school I remember the teacher reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Mr. Popper's Penguins, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Lizard Music. I really remember loving those books!

Along with a lot of the above books, I want to add Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm and The Black Stallion.

The Wind in the Willows Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh Charlotte's Web - maybe? Watership Down although I hate to recommend it.... But aside from the talking animals, no magic in any of those that I recall.

iamjackson in Book talk : Good Animal Books? (Jun 19, 2008, 10:17pm)

My brother and sister (8 and 11) have just finished Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh and Racso and the Rats of Nimh. My mom read both to them and they all would like more action/animal books to read. I second Mrs. Frisby. Our teacher read it to us and I remember it, 25+ years later. I was in 4th or 5th grade. Lots of food for thought that is still relevant today.

... Westing Game. Picked it out for my SantaThingee, in fact. Different strokes, I guess. Also, nobody's yet mentioned Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, but that's another favorite of mine.

I loved Mrs. Frisby and the rats of N.I.M.H. as a kid, and just read it to my 7 and 5 year old kids this past summer and they loved it too. We have also enjoyed the first two Narnia books. I don't know if they qualify as Fantasy, but we also loved the Silverwing books by Kenneth Oppel - ...

The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. I loved those books in elementary school. Also, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H. and The Phantom Tollbooth were favorites.

The film version of theThe Rats of NIMH bothered me; it cut out some of the better parts of the book.

I thought of another really good book I enjoyed about that age. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. I really liked it right around that age.

Almost all our leaves here are already gone. We had mostly brown but a little color. Rats and mice make me think about Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH which I read a long time ago. I know it's not a romance but I wondered if anyone else read it. It was a really good story.

I definitely remember reading Anne McCaffrey around the age of 8 or so. Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh was a favourite too. I remember re-reading Dune when I was 10. That's definitely a book that improves when reading as an adult!
