I want to weep when I realize that Octavia Bulter only wrote one of what I was sure would be another of her series, The Fledgling.
When I get truly desperate, I reread Laurell K. Hamilton's early Anita Blake books including Guilty Pleasures.
I've also been reading Diamond Star ... ... When you finish, you have the whole picture she's been setting up. If you want to go a bit off-track with Butler, try The Fledging, a slightly off-kilter look at vampires. ... and heavily technological stuff, but some of the more interesting titles I have read in the last couple of years are:
Fledging by Octavia Butler. Race, family, and the nature of power is stuffed into this very, very unusual vampire story (the premise is SF)
The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth ... ... be a literature of ideas.
I think Octavia Butler created some great, strong women characters. The character of Shori in The Fledgling fits my requirements well, although one might argue that the book is more of a vampire story with SF trappings than straightforward SF.
I think Alldera (?) ... ... Butler's works. You might also like her dystopia, Parable of the Sower and her most recent, and sadly her last novel, The Fledgling which is fascinating vampire tale . I'm not prone to reading vampire stories, but she uses this context to make us think about race, family and so much else. ... ha! I was going to say "It's awesome that one of our top shared books is The Fledgling!" until I realized, there are only three people who have it, and kristenweg and I were actually the ones who sent it to stellar_dust. So... not so cool.
