This one's amusing. McCaffrey states that she wrote it as soft porn, which it is. It's not a bad story, though I like the expansion into the Freedom novels better (where, instead of him winning, she knocks him out - and then both of them end up dropped on Freedom). In the introduction to the story, she mentions that she hasn't yet (as of 1977) written the rest of the Catteni story - she has by now (2010 - I forget just when the Freedom books were published). Some of the story reminds me of Gor (half-clad slave girl); some of it is very nice planet-building and universe-building, with an expression of who and what the Catteni are (though the Freedom books expand on that considerably). Fun story, though as I said I prefer the fuller story. ( )
