( )This collection features many of Frost's nature-themed poems such as 'The Last Mowing,' 'A Patch of Old Snow,' and 'Blue-Butterfly Day.' However, the poems usually have deeper messages and would make for excellent discussion and opportunity for interpretation among students. My favorite is 'The Rose Family.' 'The rose is a rose, / and was always a rose. / But the theory now goes / That the apple's a rose, / And the pear is, and so's / The plum, I suppose. / The dear only knows / What will next prove a rose. / You, of course, are a rose - / But were always a rose.' Frost seems to be saying that he doesn't settle for poor imitations. His love is the real thing. But there are so many deeper routes to go in discussion...Is this poem really directed at a lover? Is it really about roses? Or lose? Or something else entirely? How neat for students to see that they can delve into the poetry of someone that they have heard of but never thought that they would read until high school or college. a beautiful edition (1961?) found at Bookmans 9/07.
