Frederick Bailey is born into slavery and works as a slave with many different owners. He teaches himself to read with the help of one of his slave owner's wife, older slaves around him, and old newspapers. He escapes to the north where he starts giving speeches and talking about how horrible slavery was. He becomes famous and writes books and pamphlets on anti-slavery, After the civil war, he becomes US Marshal for the capital city. This book gives good insight into his life and accomplishments. ( )
