These diaries are set in England (especially London) during the war years. Bombings and rationing are quite taken in stride, just another part of the day. During this period, Lees-Milne worked for the National Trust, vetting buildings the Trust was interested in acquiring, or the owners were interested in donating. He traveled around England, often by bicycle, and he describes the homes and their owners compassionately and intelligently.

L-M was part of the circle that included the Mitfords (Nancy was a co-worker) and was quite a friend of Ivy Compton-Burnett and her companion, Emerald Cunard, Nigel Nicolson, etc.
