How about The Velveteen Rabbit? It's a story about a much loved stuffed animal (toy). The rabbit is definitely the main character but maybe this is too close to an animal story. The Velveteen Rabbit? ... hold back the waterworks! I have cried my way though many books, and, in fact, I had to hold back a snuffle when reading The Velveteen Rabbit to my grandaughter just yesterday! ... wearing two tone shes which I love to this day..I'd so love to see that book again; my mum threw it away. I understand that not everyone who has The Velveteen Rabbit has that version, but that's part of why allowing people to choose which series to display on their series page is kind of important.

Jody, I agree that is very sad story. That would have bothered me as a child as well. I've never gotten over Velveteen Rabbit and Charlotte's Web! I forgot to write down The Velveteen Rabbit. That, above all, is my favorite story. I think of any story, written by or for anyone. That is the story that most speaks to me. The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Definitely The Giving Tree - I have a version in Hebrew and just looking at the pictures makes me cry. Also The Velveteen Rabbit - I have an attachment to my childhood stuffed animals that is probably unhealthy. As for music, I only cry when I here my friends sing out of tune. Don't ask why, it's not beautiful or anything, I just tear up for some reason. Also, ... ... happens here.
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. It had me blubbering, sort of a twist on the Velveteen Rabbit and becoming "real". Very sad story with a bit of hope at the end, great illustrations. Probably too disturbingly sad for young children. Probably too ... There were quite a few, as I recall.
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams which is about a toy rabbit who is loved to life;
Swish of the Curtain by Pamela Brown which she wrote when she was just 14 (although you wouldn't believe it) about an amateur drama group;
