Anyhow, I've finished my sojourn with Ignatius J. Reilly et al, and am moving on to:
A Fraction of the Whole, by Steve Toltz.

Cushla, my copy of A Fraction of the Whole isn't particularly big, but these library books I've been getting are monsters, so I can imagine this one might be too if you got it in hardback. Th ... Bonnie I've seen A Fraction of the Whole but haven't been tempted (yet) - the length is the main thing putting me off. Looking forward to your reaction when you finish it.
Rocketjk I am going to look at your list now... I liked A Fraction of the Whole but it certainly wasn't without its flaws. For a debut novel it's amazingly ambitious but this tells against it in some ways too - you get the feeling that Toltz has crammed in absolutely every idea and witticism he'd jotted down in his notebook since he was a kid. ... ~Big wave to Bonnie~ Funny, I have had A Fraction of the Whole on my wishlist, what seems like forever and you just reminded me why it's there! I need to snag a copy! See ya friend! ... book to book, not quite settling down with one. A couple of comments about a book I haven't finished yet. I liked Andrew Masterson's The Letter Girl too, not sad or depressing but it may not qualify as 'litera ... I've just finished A Fraction Of The Whole and it was absolutely marvelous! It reminded me many times of early Peter Carey novels: Bliss, Oscar and Lucinda and probably Illywhacker, 'probably' because I've only read it once, many years ago, and I barely remember it - must rectify that soon.

next I'm back on the bookring wagon with A Fraction Of The Whole ... On a slightly related theme, I've also got Through Black Spruce on my bookshelf waiting for me to get up the courage.
A Fraction of the Whole is still my favourite of the year so far. Maybe it's the father/son angle.

Actually, with that one I'll probably read it first before I give it to him. I want to read Little Bee too, though more for the cover ... Bonnie, A Fraction of the Whole looks good. Will order it from the library. Thank you.

I was born in Collingwood ... WOW! A Fraction of the Whole is set in Australia. It's supposed to be a big one though, and you deserve some easy reads. ... I'd be interested in reading My Name is Will: a novel of sex, drugs and Shakespeare.
