Is it a good book? Probably, but so is Catch-22 and Wating for Godot, and I hate them too for the same reason. All are clever for the sake of being clever. There is some pithy take away that requires lengthy enjoyment for some, but torture for me. There are some books that work this way that I enjoy, but others that tend toward existentialism I just find too tedious. I've enjoyed all of Jonathan Carroll's books. He's one of the very best writers working in "urban fantasy" or "magic realism" or however else you want to label good fantasy that's well-written and has no unicorns. And this is one of his best, and darkest, books. Very disturbing and sad at a primal level--it will haunt you. no reviews | add a review

Four strangers' lives are turned upside down when death comes for a visit At first it seems like an ordinary dream. Talkative Englishman Ian McGann meets a long-dead acquaintance and asks him questions about the afterlife. But when he awakes, a thick pink scar stretches across his chest. Each subsequent night, as he dreams of death, he asks more questions, understands less, and awakens with increasingly gruesome injuries. When he meets an American traveler in Sardinia and tells him of his experience, the stranger begins having matching dreams--with the same painful results. Across the globe, a former TV icon struggles with leukemia, and a movie star falls in love with an HIV-positive photographer. All are flirting with death, and the more they struggle to understand the mysteries of the afterlife, the more they realize the world is not nearly as simple as they once believed. This ebook contains an all-new introduction by Jonathan Carroll, as well as an exclusive illustrated biography of the author including rare images from his personal collection. While From the Teeth of Angels was not quite as profound as some of Carroll's other books (i.e. The Wooden Sea, White Apples, or The Ghost in Love) in terms of its philosophy, it still was rather good. The letters, in particular, were a treat and the structure of the story was rather enjoyable.
Carroll knows how to turn a pretty phrase. I'm quite happy that I took the time to read this. He always makes me think. ( )
