The story revolves around Issac (last name escapes me) a meteorololgist in Galvaston and the political intrigue that combined with the horrific hurricane, probably led to thousands of deaths that ... ... of disaster books. I never really knew I was a "disaster buff" but some of my favorite books were The Johnstown Flood, Isaac's Storm, The Devil in White City,and The Brooklyn Bridge so I definitely qualify.

It made Austin unlivable during November, December, and January ever after, and caused the water table in that part of the state to drop by many, many feet...despite being over 200 miles from the coast.

#273: Isaac's Storm is very good as are all of Larson's books. I enjoy his writing style a lot. oh, that looks like a good one...on to the tbr pile goes Issac's Storm Thanks for mentioning this one. Yes, that's the guy. I want to read another of his books, Isaac's Storm, about the great unnamed Hurricane that flattened Galveston in 1900. #6: I really like Larson's writing style. I think I have read everything of his to date. You may want to give Isaac's Storm and Thunderstruck a try, too. ... in Earth's literature can be funny.
I can't think of a standalone that I really enjoyed on re-reading. Perhaps Time Storm would survive...I haven't re-read it, so I'm not sure. ... rds

I read Isaac's Storm a few years ago and found it compelling. OK, scary.... more than "suspense" novels, because this was real.

I'm listening to Fox News Radio broadcasting from Houston and glancing through my copy of Isaac's Storm. And praying for anyone who didn't get off Galveston Island in time. God help the folks in Galveston. I just pulled out my copy of Isaac's Storm and flipped through it again. It's half an hour after midnight and I have Fox Radio playing in the background. Galveston is expecting high tide of 15 feet and on top of that, a 20 foot storm surge. Give me the mountains ... ... at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson (August). I am a big fan of Larson's narrative nonfiction since reading Isaac's Storm, about the 1900 hurricane that wiped out Galveston, Texas. This one came highly recommended, and I really enjoyed it. Love the ... As for timing - I started Isaac's Storm while in hotel in Oklahoma City... after evacuating Houston in front of Hurricane Rita. This was a month after Katrina in 2005. That made it a bit more intense.
(Rita ending up missing Houston and pounding the Texas/Louisiana border instead). Sudden Sea the story of the New England hurricane of 1938.

To me Resurrection Man, as well as Mockingbird, Galveston and Perfect Circle are all perfect examples of urban fantasy. ... it's very well done. Larson really makes history (a subject I don't care for much otherwise) really come alive in Isaac's Storm. You'll really come away from reading it with a proper fear of hurricanes. I had this book on my mind prior to, during and after Katrina. ... have never cared for travel tales, but love biography, perhaps because character is at the heart of a story for me. Thus, Isaac's Storm, which emphasized one man in the story of the hurricane that destroyed Galveston, seemed as thrilling to me as a novel. On the other hand, new information ... #18 Dulcibelle, Erik Larson also wrote a book called Isaac's Storm. Isaac's Storm. Everyone's heard of this one. I mooched my copy through Book Mooch, and it was saturated with a perfume I'm allergic to, so I had to stop reading after a few ... ... thing about it, really, is how dated it is. I guess that would be true of any guidebook of a big city, though.

Nothing finished yet (huh, ... #85 Concetta: I have read Isaac's Storm… while evacuating Houston in front of Hurricane Rita (just after Katrina hit New Orleans). Timing was everything and the book was riveting. Had I read it another time I'm sure I still would have liked it, but not near as much. For that reason I didn't ... ... book. It turned me on to reading again, which I stopeed doing after I had children - now I am addicted again. I also read Isaac's Storm by Eric Larson. Its definitely not as good, but I loved it, too, and recommend it if you like weather related topics at all.
