... I truly love - if I read the books back to back so as not to forget details), read the book by Erik Larson called Isaac's Storm when you read the Hurricane Katrina book. That hurricane in Galveston, Texas in 1900 (which really happened) comes alive in all its terror in Larson's book. :O ...

I loved Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson, a page-turner about the great Galvaston hurricane of 1900. The story revolves around Issac (last name escapes me) a meteorololgist in Galvaston and the political intrigue that combined with the horrific hurricane, probably led to thousands of deaths that ...

... of disaster books. I never really knew I was a "disaster buff" but some of my favorite books were The Johnstown Flood, Isaac's Storm, The Devil in White City, and The Brooklyn Bridge so I definitely qualify. Thanks for some great ideas!

Very happy today. Visited a branch of the library which has a pretty good secondhand shop, and got Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson and The Queen of the Tambourine by Jane Gardam - both these books were on my TLF list (To Look For) and now they are on my TBR Behemoth pile.

Welcome to the group! Since you liked Larson's Isaac's Storm, you might try a couple of his other books: Devil in the White City and Thunderstruck. They are both very good.

... my cup of tea -- I have very eclectic tastes, but my operatic interests tend more toward Italian opera.) I just finished Isaac's Storm today! I thought it was amazing. Kath I'm sorry to hear about Morgan. I certainly hope she will be fine. Regarding Issac's Storm, I've had this on the tbr pile for a long time. I need to move it up some notches. Your description sounds intriguing.

I finished Isaac's Storm . It is a very good book about the hurricane that hit Galveston, Tx in 1900. recommended read~ I started one that I found at half price books the other day. It is a bit of fluff called Snow Island. I bought it because it was signed by the author... ( yes, I ...

Well, I agree with ficus, it is too soon to know for sure. I do know that Isaac's Storm will make the list :)

I do love Isaac's Storm, dear mckait, though I detest the event. It made Austin unlivable during November, December, and January ever after, and caused the water table in that part of the state to drop by many, many feet...despite being over 200 miles from the coast. That dratted hurricane ...

Yes, that's the guy. I want to read another of his books, Isaac's Storm, about the great unnamed Hurricane that flattened Galveston in 1900.

#6: I really like Larson's writing style. I think I have read everything of his to date. You may want to give Isaac's Storm and Thunderstruck a try, too.

If you enjoyed Devil in the White City by Larson, you might try Isaac's Storm by the same author, about the 1900 hurricane which leveled Galveston, but led to the solid establishment of the National Weather Service. I have Larson's Thunderstruck on my TBR for the year.

... you are at all interested in the Galveston hurricane that pretty much wiped out the island 100 years ago, I would recommend Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson.

I'm listening to Fox News Radio broadcasting from Houston and glancing through my copy of Isaac's Storm. And praying for anyone who didn't get off Galveston Island in time.

God help the folks in Galveston. I just pulled out my copy of Isaac's Storm and flipped through it again. It's half an hour after midnight and I have Fox Radio playing in the background. Galveston is expecting high tide of 15 feet and on top of that, a 20 foot storm surge. Give me the mountains ...

As for timing - I started Isaac's Storm while in hotel in Oklahoma City... after evacuating Houston in front of Hurricane Rita. This was a month after Katrina in 2005. That made it a bit more intense. (Rita ending up missing Houston and pounding the Texas/Louisiana border instead).

Sudden Sea the story of the New England hurricane of 1938. Isaac's storm the Galveston Texas hurricane of 1900 Several good books have been written about the floods on the Mississippi river. You could look them up by subject. Also the Johnstown PA flood & the Buffalo Creek flood disaster ...

... I wouldn't call it - or anything else I've read by him - science fiction. To me Resurrection Man, as well as Mockingbird, Galveston and Perfect Circle are all perfect examples of urban fantasy.

... it's very well done. Larson really makes history (a subject I don't care for much otherwise) really come alive in Isaac's Storm. You'll really come away from reading it with a proper fear of hurricanes. I had this book on my mind prior to, during and after Katrina.

... have never cared for travel tales, but love biography, perhaps because character is at the heart of a story for me. Thus, Isaac's Storm, which emphasized one man in the story of the hurricane that destroyed Galveston, seemed as thrilling to me as a novel. On the other hand, new information ...
